Stepping into London for the first time was quite a lot to take in. The city felt enormous, noisy, and fast-moving. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I found myself disoriented. If you’re about to go through the same experience, take heart. Here’s some guidance to assist you in acclimatizing to London prior to your start at Imperial, enabling you to relish your new urban life.

Whether you’re arriving several weeks early or just right before the term begins, here is the counsel I wish I had received upon my arrival.

Secure Accommodation

Steer clear of pricey hotel expenses by organizing your housing in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone gets that chance. The prime spots get snatched up quickly, so strive to live close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to avoid lengthy commutes for early morning classes.

Necessary Life Administration

Upon arriving in London, prioritize these essential tasks:

  • Money transfers: If you’re an international student, discover an affordable method to transfer funds from home. Platforms like Wise or Revolut provide better exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card: Acquire one right away to prevent being stranded without data.
  • Bank account: Digital banking options like Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater to students, which are essential for everyday transactions and part-time job earnings.
  • Student ID card: This is vital for accessing campus resources, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as quickly as possible.

Initial Week at Imperial

Your first week is pivotal for your experience as a student. Connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Engage in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re reserved, make an effort to join in. I formed close friendships during campus tours and society activities. This week lays the groundwork for your university experience.

Smart Travel in London

At first, I was confused about the Tube and bus systems and ended up walking nine kilometers to explore. Don’t make the same mistake. Acquire a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. Walking remains a fantastic way to unearth hidden treasures in the city.

Identify Your Comfortable Spaces

London can be emotionally heavy. Seek out a comforting location, such as a local park or a favorite venue, to unwind and recharge. For me, it’s a neighborhood park and the O2 for movie outings. Discover your own comforting spaces, whether it’s a cafe, bookstore, or a bench by the river.

Discover the City

Get to know the areas surrounding your campus and residence. Identify supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and preferred dining spots. Check out iconic landmarks, free museums, and enjoy spontaneous walks around the city. Some of your fondest memories will arise from wandering a bit off course.

Concluding Advice for Life at Imperial

  • Carry a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use ones.
  • Consider purchasing a waterproof jacket; umbrellas don’t work well in gusty conditions.
  • Participate in unique events for unforgettable experiences.
  • Don’t be concerned if you feel disoriented; that’s completely normal initially.

It’s not necessary to have everything sorted out on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was. Take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and begin your London journey step by step.
