Arriving in London was initially a lot to take in with its large scale and rapid tempo. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt disoriented. If you find yourself in a similar position soon, do not fret. Here are some tips to help you acclimate to London before commencing at Imperial, allowing you to embrace your new city life.
Regardless of whether you arrive weeks in advance or just before the term starts, here’s some guidance I wish I had been given.
First things first: secure housing
Steer clear of costly hotel stays by arranging accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone has that experience. Opt for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy travels for morning classes.
Administrative tasks: crucial essentials to address
As soon as you arrive in London, focus on the following:
- Money transfers – as an international student, discover a dependable method for transferring funds from your home country. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide better exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – vital for internet access and guidance. Acquire one right after you land.
- Bank account – some banks necessitate a UK address, but online banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and student-friendly. Establish an account for daily transactions and part-time job payments.
- Student ID card – necessary for gaining access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Ensure you collect it promptly.
The significance of your first week at Imperial
Your initial week at Imperial is vital. It’s the time you meet roommates, peers, and future companions. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led groups and organizations and join those that catch your interest.
Even if you consider yourself shy, challenge yourself to get involved. I made close friends during campus tours and at society booths. Your first week establishes the foundation for your university journey.
Getting around London: travel wisely
At first, I struggled to understand the Tube or buses and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable but hectic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to reduce travel costs.
Walking remains an excellent way to navigate the city and uncover hidden treasures.
Discover your comfort zones
London can be emotionally taxing. Having a favorite spot can be comforting – mine is a local park where I like to unwind. The O2 is another cherished location for movies and relaxation.
Identify your own comforting places, whether it’s a cafe, bookstore, or a bench by the river. These locations are often more beneficial than you realize.
Adventure around the city!
Get acquainted with neighborhoods surrounding your campus and home. Pinpoint your nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and preferred eateries.
Visit iconic landmarks, explore complimentary museums, and enjoy the scenery from a red double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will be born out of getting lost a bit!
Final pointers before starting at Imperial
- Use a reusable bag – stores charge for disposable ones.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t effective against the wind.
- Join unique events – they make for amazing stories.
- Don’t stress if you feel a bit lost – it’s completely normal initially.
You don’t need to have everything figured out from the get-go. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when starting at Imperial. Take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
