Stepping into London for the first time was quite a lot to take in. The city felt enormous, noisy, and fast-moving. Equipped with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I found myself at a loss on where to start. If you’re about to take this leap, there’s no need to panic. Here’s some guidance to assist you in adjusting and making the most of your new life in London before you embark on your journey at Imperial.

Whether you arrive several weeks ahead or right before the semester begins, this is the guidance I wish I had received.

First and foremost: secure a place to stay

To sidestep pricey hotel expenses, organize your accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. The most desirable options get snapped up quickly, so strive to find a residence close to your campus or on a reliable Tube line to keep commuting time for early lectures to a minimum.

Administrative essentials: tackling the necessary tasks

Upon arriving in London, make these tasks a priority:

  • Money transfers – as an international student, pinpoint an economical way to transfer funds. Services like Wise or Revolut provide competitive exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – obtain one right away to ensure you have mobile data for navigation in a new city.
  • Bank account – digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater to students. An account is needed for everyday transactions and payments from part-time jobs.
  • Student ID card – crucial for accessing campus buildings, libraries, and receiving student discounts. Acquire it as soon as possible.

The first week at Imperial is key

Your initial week at Imperial holds great significance. It’s a time when you’ll meet your flatmates, fellow students, and potential companions. Take part in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student clubs and societies. Even if you’re a bit reserved, make an effort to join in. Some of my closest friendships formed during campus tours and society activities. This week will help shape your university experience.

Getting around London: travel wisely

During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable but quite hectic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. Walking remains a fantastic method to uncover hidden treasures in the city.

Discover your comfort zones

London can be emotionally intense. Identifying a comfort zone is beneficial. For me, it’s the park near my residence and the O2 for films. Seek out your favorite places, such as a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to unwind and recharge.

And don’t forget to venture out!

Acquaint yourself with your new environment. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining spots. Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, and enjoy unplanned strolls. Some of your finest memories may arise from wandering a bit off the beaten path!

Final pointers before immersing into Imperial student life

  • Carry a reusable bag – shops charge for single-use options.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas don’t hold up well in windy conditions.
  • Participate in unconventional events – they can lead to memorable stories.
  • Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s a common experience at the beginning.

You don’t need to have everything sorted on the first day. If you’re seeing this, you’re already better prepared than I was. Take a moment to breathe, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
