Touching down in London was initially quite daunting. The city seemed immense, noisy, and bustling. Armed with nothing but a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt a bit lost on where to start. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, have no fear. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimatize to London prior to your time at Imperial, allowing you to fully embrace your new urban adventure.

Regardless of whether you arrive weeks in advance or right at the start of term, here is the advice I wish had been shared with me upon my arrival.

Secure Accommodation

Bypass pricey hotel expenses by arranging lodging ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone has that privilege. The best choices disappear quickly, so aim for something close to your campus or a reliable Tube line to minimize lengthy travel for early classes.

Key Life Admin Tasks

Take care of these vital tasks shortly after you arrive in London:

  • Money transfers – International students need a dependable, cost-effective way to send money. Services like Wise or Revolut provide better exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – Crucial for data and navigation in a new environment. Acquire one at your earliest convenience.
  • Bank account – Certain banks ask for a UK address, but online banks like Monzo or Starling are swift and accommodating for students. Establish an account for everyday expenses and part-time income.
  • Student ID card – This provides access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Make sure to collect it promptly.

The Significance of Your First Week at Imperial

Your initial week at Imperial is essential. It’s when you’ll meet flatmates, peers, and future companions. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re reserved, make an effort to take part. I met some of my closest friends during random campus excursions and society booths. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.

Getting Around London: Smart Travel

At first, I was clueless about the Tube or buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was chaotic but unforgettable. Prevent this by obtaining a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for more affordable Tube and bus trips. However, walking still remains a wonderful way to uncover the city’s hidden treasures.

Identify Your Comfort Zones

London can be a lot to handle. Having a personal haven is beneficial – mine happens to be a nearby park. I visit daily to unwind. My other favorite is the O2, where I catch movies weekly. Discover your own comfort spots, such as a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, where you can relax and recharge.

Discover the City

Familiarize yourself with the areas you frequent around campus and your residence. Identify local supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your go-to eateries or coffee places. Visit iconic landmarks, free museums, and take a double-decker bus ride. Some of your fondest experiences will arise from spontaneous explorations.

Final Suggestions for Starting at Imperial

  • Utilize a reusable shopping bag to avoid fees for disposable ones.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t reliable in windy conditions.
  • Participate in unique events – they provide entertaining stories.
  • If you feel disoriented, don’t fret – that’s a common feeling at first.

You don’t need to have everything sorted out from the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I first arrived at Imperial. Take a moment to breathe, grab your Oyster card, and commence your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
