Stepping foot in London for the first time was a breathtaking experience. The city seemed vast, noisy, and frenetic. Armed with nothing but a suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain about where to start. If you are about to undergo this, there’s no need to stress. Here’s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to your new life in London before your studies at Imperial begin, enabling you to fully enjoy the city.
Whether you arrive several weeks in advance or just before the semester kicks off, here’s the advice I wish I had at my fingertips upon arrival.
First things first: secure accommodation
Steer clear of costly hotel expenses by arranging your living situation in advance. I was lucky, but many aren’t, as the finest choices can be snapped up quickly. Strive to find a place near your campus or a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes for early classes.
Administrative tasks: take care of the essentials
Once you land in London, prioritize the following:
- Money transfers – as an international student, locate a trustworthy and economical method to send money from home. Apps such as Wise or Revolut provide superior exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – having data is crucial for navigation. Obtain a UK SIM card and data package shortly after your arrival.
- Bank account – some banks necessitate a UK address, yet digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and student-friendly. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.
- Student ID card – vital for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as quickly as you can.
Your initial week at Imperial is key
Your first week at Imperial is pivotal for your student journey. This is when you’ll meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Immerse yourself in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led organizations and engage in activities that speak to you.
Even if you find it difficult to interact with others, challenge yourself to take part. I met some of my closest friends during campus tours and society events. Your initial week will shape the rest of your university experience.
Getting around London: travel wisely
During my first week, I trekked nine kilometers across London to explore, which was hectic yet unforgettable. Avoid this by acquiring a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount to travel economically on the Tube and buses.
Walking remains an excellent way to immerse yourself in the city and uncover hidden treasures.
Establish your go-to spots
London can feel daunting, particularly at the outset. Having a comfort zone is beneficial – mine is the park close to my home, where I unwind daily. The O2, merely 10 minutes away, is another preferred location for me to relax with a movie.
Discover your own comfort spots, be it a cafe, bookstore, or riverside seat, to recharge and refresh.
And make sure to explore!
Familiarize yourself with the areas you’ll frequent around campus and home. Identify your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries or coffee venues.
Visit iconic sites, check out free museums, hop on a red double-decker bus, and roam without a set plan. Some of your fondest memories will stem from being a little lost!
Last pointers before you embark on Imperial student life
- Carry a reusable bag – shops typically charge for disposable ones.
- Invest in a waterproof coat – umbrellas don’t fare well against gusty winds.
- Participate in quirky events – they create fantastic stories.
- Don’t fret if you feel disoriented – it’s a common feeling at first.
You don’t have to have everything sorted on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I found myself when I commenced at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and begin your London adventure, one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
