Stepping into London for the first time was an astonishing experience for me. The city appeared vast, noisy, and vibrant. With only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you are about to go through this, don’t fret. Here are some tips to assist you in acclimating to your new life in London before commencing at Imperial, ensuring you can relish the city.
Whether you’re arriving weeks beforehand or just prior to the term, here’s the advice I wish I had been given upon my arrival.
Main Focus: Secure Housing
Prevent costly hotel stays by organizing your housing in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the prime choices vanish quickly. Strive to reside close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to evade lengthy commutes for morning classes.
Key Life Arrangements
When you arrive in London, swiftly manage the following:
- Money transfers – As an international student, seek an economical method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide excellent exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – Obtain one quickly to ensure access to data for navigation in a new environment.
- Bank account setup – Digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and student-friendly. Open an account for everyday transactions and part-time job deposits.
- Student ID card – This allows access to campus buildings, libraries, and student perks. Collect it as soon as possible.
Significance of the First Week at Imperial
Your first week at Imperial is vital for your student experience. It’s the moment to connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Engage in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and join those that pique your interest.
Even if you’re introverted, make an effort to take part in events. I met some of my closest friends during campus tours and society booths. Your first week establishes the foundation for your university experience.
Intelligent Commuting in London
During my initial week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, resulting in a nine-kilometer trek across London. While unforgettable, it’s wiser to obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable Tube and bus fares.
Walking remains a fantastic way to explore the city and uncover hidden treasures.
Find Your Relaxation Spaces
London can be emotionally taxing at first. Locating a comfort space is beneficial – mine is a nearby park where I go each day to unwind. Another is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I enjoy a movie weekly.
Discover your own relaxation spots, whether a cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench, to help you de-stress and recharge.
Discover the City
Get to know frequently visited locations around campus and your home. Find your nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee spots.
Check out famous landmarks, explore free museums, ride a red double-decker bus, and stroll without a specific plan. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from wandering a bit off course!
Final Advice for Starting at Imperial
- Carry a reusable bag to sidestep fees for single-use ones.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket, as umbrellas often fail against the wind.
- Participate in unique events for unforgettable experiences.
- Do not fret if you feel confused initially; it’s a normal feeling.
You don’t need to have everything sorted out on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already doing better than I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
