Stepping into London for the first time was a bit daunting due to its enormity and rapid tempo. With just a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost on where to start. If you find yourself in the same situation, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimate to London prior to beginning your journey at Imperial, allowing you to savor your new urban life.

Whether you’re arriving early or just in time for the term, here’s what I wish I had known upon my initial arrival.

Secure accommodation

Prevent costly hotel stays by planning your lodging in advance. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone, as the prime options fill up quickly. Aim for a residence close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes for morning lectures.

Administrative tasks: essentials to address

Once you’re in London, tackle these important tasks:

  • Bank transfers – as an international student, find a trustworthy method to send money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable rates.
  • Acquire a UK SIM card – vital for navigation and communication. Obtain one right after you arrive.
  • Open a bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are swift and accommodating for students. You’ll require an account for transactions and part-time employment payments.
  • Obtain your student ID card – this allows access to campus amenities, libraries, and student discounts. Secure it as soon as you can.

The significance of your first week at Imperial

Your initial week at Imperial is pivotal for your student experience. It’s the time to connect with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to explore over 350 student-led organizations and join those that pique your interest.

Even if you’re reserved, challenge yourself to engage. I did, and I met some of my closest friends during campus tours and society events. Your first week establishes the tone for your university experience.

Getting around London: travel wisely

During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable but somewhat chaotic. Instead, get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel economically on public transport.

Walking remains an excellent method to experience the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Discover your comfort zones

London can be emotionally intense at first. Having a go-to place is beneficial – for me, it’s the park near my residence. I frequent it daily to unwind. My second spot is the O2, a mere 10 minutes away, where I catch movies weekly.

Identify your own comfort locations, such as a café, bookstore, or a riverside bench, to relax and reconnect.

Discover the city!

Familiarize yourself with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and home. Find your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee locations.

Visit iconic landmarks, explore complimentary museums, and relish rides on the iconic red double-decker buses. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from impromptu adventures.

Final suggestions before commencing Imperial student life

  • Utilize a reusable bag – stores frequently charge for single-use bags.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas struggle against the wind.
  • Participate in unusual events – they yield the best stories.
  • Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s common at the beginning.

There’s no need to have everything figured out on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London narrative one bus ride and grocery trip at a time.
