By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing
My arrival in London felt quite overwhelming at first. The city appeared vast, noisy, and bustling. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I was disoriented. If you are about to face this, don’t fret. Here’s how to acclimate to life in London prior to commencing at Imperial, so you can savor the city as a newcomer.
Whether you get here weeks in advance or right before the term starts, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.
Secure Accommodation
Prevent expensive hotel stays by organizing your housing early. I was lucky, but not everyone has that fortune. The best options vanish quickly, so seek a residence near your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize long commutes for morning classes.
Key Life Administration
Upon reaching London, tackle these essential tasks swiftly:
- Money Transfers – As an international student, find a dependable, budget-friendly method to transfer funds from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide more favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM Card – Navigating without data can be challenging. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan soon after arrival.
- Bank Account Creation – Some banks ask for a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and student-friendly. Establish an account for everyday transactions and income from part-time jobs.
- Student ID Card – This is vital for accessing university buildings, libraries, and discounts for students. Obtain it as soon as you can.
The Significance of Your First Week at Imperial
Your initial week at Imperial is essential. It’s the time to meet flatmates, classmates, and future pals. Engage with Welcome Week to delve into over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re introverted, encourage yourself to join in. I forged close friendships during spontaneous campus tours and society presentations. This week sets the stage for your university experience.
Travel Wisely in London
During my first week, I struggled to grasp the Tube and bus system, resulting in a nine-kilometer walk across London. It was memorable yet chaotic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and request the 18+ discount for economical travel on the Tube and buses. Walking remains an excellent way to explore and uncover hidden treasures.
Identify Your Comfort Zones
London can be emotionally intense. Having a go-to place is beneficial. My preferred location is a nearby park where I relax daily. My second choice is the O2, just a 10-minute trip away, where I catch movies every week. Discover your own places, like a cafe or a bookstore, to relax and recharge.
Discover London
Familiarize yourself with the areas you will frequent near your campus and residence. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite food joints. Visit iconic landmarks, browse free museums, and experience a ride on a red double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories may come from wandering a bit off course.
Closing Tips for Starting at Imperial
- Utilize a reusable bag to avoid fees for disposable ones.
- Invest in a waterproof coat; umbrellas aren’t very useful during windy weather.
- Take part in unique events for unforgettable stories.
- Don’t be concerned if you feel disoriented at first; it’s completely normal.
You don’t need to have everything sorted out on day one. If you are reading this, you are already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
