Stepping foot in London for the first time felt intimidating. The metropolis appeared immense, bustling, and frenetic, leaving me somewhat disoriented with only a suitcase and Google Maps in hand. If you’re about to face this situation, there’s no need to fret. Here’s how to acclimate to London prior to commencing at Imperial, so you can relish your new life in the city.
Whether you settle in weeks early or just moments before classes begin, here’s the guidance I wish I had received upon my arrival.
First Action: Arrange Housing
Prevent expensive hotel bills by organizing your housing in advance. I was lucky, but many are not, as the top options vanish quickly. Seek accommodation close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes to morning lectures.
Necessary Administrative Tasks
Upon your arrival in London, promptly take care of these essentials:
- Money transfers – International students require an economical method to send money. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – Make sure to obtain a UK SIM card right away to ensure you have data for navigation.
- Bank account establishment – Digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and student-friendly, important for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.
- Student ID card – This is vital for utilizing campus services, libraries, and obtaining student discounts. Retrieve it as soon as you can.
The Significance of the First Week at Imperial
Your first week at Imperial is essential for your student experience. It’s the moment to meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-organized clubs and societies and engage in activities that pique your interest.
Even if you are introverted, challenge yourself to get involved. I did, and formed some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society events. Your first week lays the foundation for your university experience.
Intelligent Travel in London
During my first week, while unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, I trekked nine kilometers across London. It was hectic yet unforgettable. Avoid my error by acquiring a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for more affordable Tube and bus travel.
Walking remains an excellent way to navigate the city and uncover hidden treasures.
Find Your Relaxation Spots
London can initially feel overwhelming. Discovering a relaxation space helps – mine is a local park where I destress daily. Another is the O2, just a short ten-minute journey, where I enjoy weekly movies.
Identify your own comfort zones, whether it’s a cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench, to unwind and recharge.
Go Out and Explore
Acquaint yourself with commonly visited areas around your campus and residence. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining spots.
Visit well-known attractions, explore free museums, and take a ride on a classic red double-decker bus. Some of your fondest memories will arise from spontaneous outings!
Last Pieces of Advice Before Starting Life at Imperial
- Bring a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket since umbrellas can be useless in windy conditions.
- Embrace quirky events for unforgettable stories.
- Don’t fret if you feel disoriented at first – it’s completely normal.
You don’t need to have everything sorted from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. So take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
