Stepping into London for the first time was quite a lot to take in. The city appeared vast, noisy, and bustling. With only a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I was uncertain how to start. If you’re on the brink of this experience, don’t be concerned. Here’s some guidance to assist you in settling down in London before you begin at Imperial, so you can truly enjoy the city.

Whether you arrive weeks prior or just before classes commence, here’s what I wish I had known right after arriving.

Secure Accommodation

Steer clear of pricey hotels by arranging your accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone is. The most desirable options get taken quickly, so look for a spot close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to avoid lengthy commutes.

Administrative Tasks: Essentials

Once in London, tackle these essentials promptly:

  • Money transfers – As an international student, seek a trustworthy method to send money from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable rates.
  • UK SIM card – Acquire one right away for data and navigation in your new surroundings.
  • Bank account – Some banks may require a UK address, but digital banks, such as Monzo or Starling, are quick and friendly to students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.
  • Student ID card – This is vital for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.

Your First Week at Imperial Matters

Your initial week at Imperial is vital for meeting flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re introverted, challenge yourself to get involved. I forged close friendships during spontaneous campus tours and society stalls. This week shapes your university experience.

Getting Around London: Travel Wisely

During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or the buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers through London. It was unforgettable but a bit chaotic. Get a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced fares on the Tube and buses. Walking remains a fantastic way to uncover the city’s hidden treasures.

Discover Your Safe Spaces

London may feel overwhelming at first. Find a comfort zone, like a park, café, bookstore, or a riverside bench to relax and recharge. My go-to spots include a nearby park and the O2, where I unwind weekly.

Adventure Awaits!

Get acquainted with the areas surrounding your campus and residence. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite food or coffee joints. Check out iconic landmarks, visit free museums, ride a double-decker bus, and aimlessly wander. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from getting slightly lost.

Last Tips for Kicking Off at Imperial

  • Carry a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use ones.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas aren’t very effective in the wind.
  • Join unique events for unforgettable stories.
  • Don’t fret if you feel disoriented; it’s completely normal at first.

You don’t need to have everything sorted from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco trip at a time.
