Stepping into London for the first time felt quite daunting. The city appeared enormous, noisy, and bustling. Armed only with a suitcase and Google Maps, I found myself uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar situation, there’s no need to fret. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimate to London before your journey at Imperial, enabling you to relish your new urban lifestyle.

No matter if you arrive several weeks in advance or just in time for the term, here’s the advice I wished I had when I first landed.

Securing Housing

Steer clear of expensive hotel accommodations by arranging your housing early. I was lucky, but not everyone has that fortune, as the prime options vanish quickly. Try to find a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes for morning lectures.

Essential Administrative Tasks

As soon as you arrive in London, focus on these important tasks:

  • Money transfers – International students require an economical way to send money. Services like Wise or Revolut provide competitive exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – Ensure you can navigate by obtaining a UK SIM card without delay.
  • Bank account – Digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick to set up and cater to students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and payments from part-time jobs.
  • Student ID card – This is essential for utilizing campus resources, libraries, and availing student discounts. Retrieve it as soon as you can.

Significance of the Initial Week at Imperial

Your first week at Imperial is vital for your experience as a student. It’s the moment to connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential lifelong friends. Participate in Welcome Week events to discover more than 350 student-run clubs and societies.

Even if you feel timid, challenge yourself to get involved. I forged close friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. This week establishes the groundwork for your university life.

Smart Travel in London

At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, ultimately walking nine kilometers throughout London. Prevent this by acquiring a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for more affordable transit.

Walking still remains an excellent method to uncover the city and find hidden treasures.

Identifying Comfort Zones

London can be emotionally taxing. Having a favorite spot can be comforting. For me, it’s a local park and the O2 for film nights. Discover your own locations such as a coffee shop, bookstore, or bench by the river to unwind and recharge.

City Exploration

Acquaint yourself with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Identify local grocery stores, pharmacies, parks, and preferred dining spots.

Tour iconic landmarks, visit free museums, and soak in the urban scenery. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from unplanned escapades.

Final Recommendations for Your Start at Imperial

  • Bring a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use options.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket since umbrellas can’t withstand the wind.
  • Attend unconventional events for unforgettable experiences.
  • Don’t stress if you feel out of place at first; this is completely normal.

You don’t need to have everything sorted on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a moment to breathe, get your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
