Stepping into London for the very first time was a breathtaking experience. The city felt enormous, noisy, and bustling with activity. With just a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I found myself disoriented. If you’re gearing up for a similar adventure, there’s no need to stress. Here’s how to settle into London before your studies at Imperial begin, allowing you to relish your new urban life.

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or right before classes start, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

Secure Your Accommodation First

Prevent expensive hotel stays by arranging your accommodation early on. I got lucky, but not everyone does, as prime spots get taken quickly. Strive for a location close to your campus or on a dependable Tube line to spare yourself long commutes for early lectures.

Key Administrative Tasks

As soon as you land, focus on the following:

  • Money transfers – International students need cost-effective methods to receive funds. Services like Wise or Revolut provide better exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – Crucial for accessing data and navigating a new city. Obtain one straight away.
  • Bank account – Some banks may ask for a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are speedy and friendly for students. Open an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.
  • Student ID card – This provides entry to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Make sure you collect it without delay.

Optimizing Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your first week is vital for meeting flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week activities to discover over 350 student clubs and societies. Even if you tend to be reserved, challenge yourself to join in. I formed close friendships during spontaneous campus tours and society fairs. This week establishes the foundation for your university journey.

Travel Wisely in London

During my first week, I ended up walking nine kilometers across London due to misinterpretations of the Tube and bus system. Avoid making the same error by obtaining a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. Walking remains an excellent way to unearth the city’s hidden treasures.

Discover Your Favorite Comfort Zones

London can be mentally taxing. Having a favorite comfort zone is beneficial – for me, it’s a local park I visit daily to unwind. The O2, located just 10 minutes away, serves as my secondary spot for weekly movie nights. Identify your own retreats, be it a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, where you can relax and recharge.

Discover the City

Become acquainted with areas surrounding your campus and residence. Find your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred eateries. Tour iconic sights, visit complimentary museums, ride a classic red double-decker bus, and wander aimlessly. Some of your most memorable experiences will stem from getting slightly lost.

Final Recommendations for Beginning at Imperial

  • Carry a reusable bag – Shops charge for single-use bags.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – Umbrellas are inadequate against wind.
  • Engage in unique events – They often result in the best stories.
  • Don’t be concerned if you feel disoriented – It’s entirely normal at first.

You don’t have to have everything sorted on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I started. Take a deep breath, pick up your Oyster card, and begin your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
