Arriving in London was an awe-inspiring experience. The city felt vast, noisy, and bustling. With only a suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain about where to start. If you’re facing a similar predicament, there’s no need to fret. Here’s how to acclimate to London life before commencing at Imperial, ensuring you savor your new urban adventure.
Whether you land weeks in advance or right before the term kicks off, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.
Secure Accommodation First
Steer clear of pricey hotels by locking down accommodation early. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune. The top choices vanish quickly! Strive for a location close to campus or a dependable Tube line—early classes can be a challenge if you’re more than an hour away.
Key Life Admin
Organize these necessities shortly after your arrival in London:
- Money transfers – as an international student, utilize apps such as Wise or Revolut for cost-effective transfers from your native country.
- UK SIM card – obtain one right away for data connectivity and navigation in a new locality.
- Bank account – digital banks like Monzo or Starling offer swift and student-friendly setups. Establish an account for day-to-day transactions and part-time job earnings.
- Student ID card – crucial for access to campus facilities, library services, and student discounts. Collect it without delay.
Imperial’s Initial Week is Key
Your first week at Imperial is essential. Meet your flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re introverted, challenge yourself to join in. I made good friends during impromptu campus tours and society stalls. This week lays the foundation for your university experience.
Travel Wisely in London
During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, resulting in me walking nine kilometers across London. It was a memorable but chaotic adventure. Avoid my blunder. Get a Student Oyster card and seek the 18+ discount for reduced Tube and bus fares. Walking remains a fantastic way to unveil hidden treasures in the city.
Identify Your Comfort Zones
London can feel overwhelming. Having a comfort zone helps—mine is a local park where I unwind daily. The O2, merely 10 minutes away, is another venue where I catch movies weekly. Discover your own favorite spots, whether they are a café or bookstore, to relax in the city.
Discover the City
Get acquainted with the neighborhoods surrounding campus and your residence. Locate your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining options. Explore iconic landmarks, free museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from getting slightly lost!
Final Suggestions for Starting at Imperial
- Bring a reusable bag—stores impose charges for single-use ones.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket—umbrellas aren’t effective against strong winds.
- Participate in unique events—they create remarkable stories.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented—everyone experiences that at first.
You’re not required to have everything sorted on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a moment to breathe, grab your Oyster card, and commence your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
