Stepping into London for the first time was a bit daunting with its enormity and quick tempo. Equipped with merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I found myself uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar position, there’s no need to panic. Here’s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to your new life in London before commencing at Imperial, allowing you to truly savor your moments in the city.

Be it arriving weeks in advance or just before the term starts, here’s the advice I wish I had upon my arrival.

First things first: secure your housing

Arrange your accommodation early to prevent costly hotel expenses. I was lucky, but not everyone has the same fortune, as the prime options vanish quickly. Aim for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to steer clear of lengthy commutes for morning classes.

Life admin: tackling the essential tasks

Once you’re in London, take care of these essentials swiftly:

  • Money transfers – as an international student, identify a trustworthy and economical means to transfer funds from home. Apps like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – acquire one promptly to ensure you have data for navigation in unfamiliar areas.
  • Bank account – some banks may demand a UK address, yet digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and student-friendly. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.
  • Student ID card – this provides access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it without delay.

The initial week at Imperial is vital

Your first week at Imperial is essential for your student journey. It’s a chance to connect with flatmates, classmates, and prospective friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and engage in activities that appeal to you.

Even if you’re reserved, challenge yourself to take part. I did and forged some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society fairs. Your initial week establishes the foundation for your university experience.

Getting around London: travel wisely

During my first week, I walked nine kilometers across London due to confusion with Tube and bus routes. It was memorable yet hectic. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel affordably around London.

Walking remains an excellent method to experience the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Discover your comfort zones

London can initially feel emotionally intense. Identifying a comforting location can help – for me, it’s a nearby park I visit daily to unwind. Another favorite is the O2, located just 10 minutes away, where I catch weekly movies to relax.

Find your own comfort zones, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, where you can recharge and refresh.

And remember to explore!

Get acquainted with your frequently visited areas near campus and home. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining or coffee locations.

Visit renowned landmarks, explore free museums, ride a red double-decker bus for the sights, and meander without a specific plan. Some of your most cherished memories will come from getting a bit lost!

Final thoughts before diving into Imperial student life

  • Grab a reusable bag – stores often impose charges for single-use bags.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas won’t suffice during windy weather.
  • Accept unusual opportunities – they often lead to great stories.
  • Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – everyone experiences that at first.

You don’t need to have it all figured out on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was at my start at Imperial. So take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and begin your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
