Upon first arriving in London, the city struck me as vast, noisy, quick-paced, and somewhat daunting. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I was unclear on where to start. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, there’s no need to stress. Here’s my guidance to ease your transition into life in London before you begin at Imperial, allowing you to fully embrace the novelty of the city.

Whether you land weeks in advance or just before the semester commences, here’s the counsel I wish I had received upon my arrival.

Secure Your Accommodation

To steer clear of pricey hotel bills, make sure to lock down your housing early. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune, as the prime options get snatched up quickly. Try to find a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube line, since lengthy commutes can be challenging with early morning classes.

Important Life Administration

Upon reaching London, tackle these essentials without delay:

  • Money transfers – as an international student, find a trustworthy and economical method to transfer funds from home. Platforms like Wise or Revolut provide superior exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – having data is vital for getting around, so acquire a UK SIM card and data plan shortly after arrival.
  • Opening a bank account – some banks may require a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater well to students. Set up an account for everyday transactions and payments from part-time jobs.
  • Student ID card – this provides entry to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Get it as early as possible.

Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your first week at Imperial is pivotal for your entire student experience. It’s the period when you’ll connect with flatmates, colleagues, and future friends. Participate actively in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-organized clubs and societies, and enroll in activities that catch your interest.

Even if shyness is a hurdle, challenge yourself to engage. I did, and I formed some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society booths. Your initial week establishes the groundwork for your university adventure.

Getting Around London

In my opening week, I was bewildered by the Tube and buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London for exploration. It was chaotic yet unforgettable – don’t emulate my choice. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel on the Tube and buses affordably.

Walking remains the best way to truly experience the city and its culture. You’ll stumble upon hidden treasures simply by meandering.

Discover Your Comfort Zones

London can feel emotionally intense, especially in the beginning. A comforting space is helpful – mine is the park near my residence, where I go every day to unwind. My second spot is the O2, merely 10 minutes away, where I enjoy movies weekly to recharge.

Identify your own refuges, whether a café, a bookstore, or a riverside bench. These locations offer essential relaxation and rejuvenation.

Explore the Urban Landscape

Become familiar with your frequently visited areas around campus and home. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee spots.

Visit iconic landmarks, check out free museums, ride a classic red double-decker bus, and wander aimlessly. Some of your most cherished memories will emerge from getting slightly lost.

Final Suggestions

  • Carry a reusable bag – stores often impose charges for single-use options.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas often falter against strong winds.
  • Participate in unique events – they create great anecdotes.
  • Don’t fret if you feel disoriented – everyone does at first.

You don’t need to have everything mapped out on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial – so take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London journey one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
