Arriving in London for the first time was a lot to take in. The city appeared vast, noisy, and bustling. Armed with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar position, don’t stress. Here’s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to London before your journey at Imperial begins, enabling you to fully embrace your new adventure in the city.
Whether you come weeks in advance or just before the term starts, here’s what I wish I’d been aware of upon my arrival.
First things first: secure your accommodation
To evade costly hotel bills, arrange your lodging ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone has that advantage, as the best accommodations are snatched up quickly. Aim for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes for early morning classes.
Administrative tasks: taking care of the essentials
Once you’re in London, promptly address these key necessities:
- Money transfers – as an international student, discover an economical method to transfer funds from your home country. Platforms like Wise or Revolut provide competitive exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – obtain one immediately to ensure you have data for navigation in an unfamiliar area.
- Bank account – while some banks may require a UK address, digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and friendly for students. Establish an account for day-to-day transactions and part-time job salaries.
- Student ID card – crucial for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and availing student discounts. Make sure to collect it as soon as you can.
Your first week at Imperial is vital
Your inaugural week at Imperial is significant. It’s when you’ll encounter flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Engage with Welcome Week to investigate over 350 student-led clubs and societies and register for those that pique your interest.
Even if you’re reserved, make an effort to join in. I forged lasting friendships during campus tours and society events. Your first week lays the groundwork for your university experience.
Exploring London: travel wisely
Initially, I was clueless about the Tube or buses, compelling me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was an unforgettable experience but quite chaotic. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel economically on the Tube and buses.
Walking remains an excellent way to feel the city and uncover hidden treasures.
Identify your comforting spots
London can be emotionally intense. Discovering a comforting place is beneficial – mine is a nearby park where I retreat each day to unwind. I also frequent the O2 weekly for films and relaxation.
Find your own locales, be it a café, bookstore, or riverside park bench, to recharge and refresh.
And don’t forget to discover!
Get to know the areas around your campus and residence. Locate nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your favorite dining or coffee spots.
Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, take a ride on a double-decker bus, and wander aimlessly. Some of your fondest memories will stem from wandering a bit off course!
Final pointers before you plunge into Imperial student life
- Utilize a reusable bag – shops frequently charge for single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas don’t hold up well against wind.
- Participate in unique events – they create memorable stories.
- Don’t be anxious if you feel disoriented – it’s perfectly normal at the outset.
You don’t need to have everything sorted out from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I joined Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
