Stepping into London for the very first time was a lot to take in. The city appeared vast, noisy, and bustling. Armed with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost on where to begin. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, there’s no need to stress. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimate to life in London before you commence at Imperial, allowing you to fully appreciate your new urban adventure.
Whether you arrive several weeks ahead or right at the start of term, here’s the guidance I wish I had received when I landed.
Secure Accommodation
Arrange your living situation early to avoid hefty hotel bills. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. The best places vanish quickly! Look for something close to your campus or a dependable Tube line since lengthy commutes can be daunting for morning lectures.
Key Administrative Tasks
Upon your arrival, take care of these necessary tasks:
- Money Transfers: As an overseas student, seek an economical method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM Card: Acquire one right away for data access and navigation in a new locale.
- Bank Account: Digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and accommodating for students. Establish an account for everyday expenses and part-time job income.
- Student ID Card: This provides entry to campus facilities, the library, and discounted student services. Obtain it without delay.
The Significance of Your First Week at Imperial
Your initial week at Imperial is pivotal. It’s when you’ll encounter flatmates, classmates, and possible friends. Join Welcome Week to dive into over 350 student-led clubs and societies, and engage in events that pique your interest.
Even if you feel reserved, make an effort to connect. I formed some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society exhibitions. Your first week lays the groundwork for your university journey.
Navigate London Wisely
At first, I struggled to comprehend the Tube and buses, leading to a nine-kilometer trek across London. It was a memorable experience but quite chaotic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel affordably on the Tube and buses.
Walking remains an excellent way to uncover the city and find hidden treasures.
Identify Your Safe Havens
London can be emotionally taxing, particularly at the beginning. Having a comforting place is crucial. My spot is a nearby park that I visit daily to de-stress. I also frequent the O2 weekly for movies and relaxation.
Seek your own refuge, such as a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to unwind and recharge.
Discover the City
Get acquainted with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Find your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining or coffee establishments.
Explore iconic sites, check out free museums, ride a classic red double-decker bus, and wander aimlessly. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from getting slightly lost!
Final Suggestions Before Starting at Imperial
- Obtain a reusable bag to evade fees associated with single-use ones.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket, as umbrellas can be ineffective in strong winds.
- Join unique events for unforgettable stories.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented; feeling that way is normal at the beginning.
You don’t need to have everything figured out from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. So take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus journey and Tesco visit at a time.
