Stepping into London for the very first time was a bit daunting. The city appeared immense, noisy, and bustling. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost about where to start. If you’re on the brink of this experience, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to ease your transition into your new life in London prior to commencing at Imperial, allowing you to relish the city.
Regardless of whether you’re arriving weeks in advance or right before the term, here’s the counsel I wish I had received upon my arrival.
First up: secure accommodation
Steer clear of expensive hotel rates by organizing your housing ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune. The best choices vanish fast! Target a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line – lengthy commutes aren’t conducive to early morning classes.
Administrative tasks: getting the necessary basics sorted
Once you arrive in London, tackle these basics without delay:
- Money transfers – international students need dependable, cost-effective methods for receiving funds. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – having data is vital for navigating a new environment. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan soon after you land.
- Bank account – some banks may necessitate a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are swift and cater well to students. Establish an account for daily transactions and part-time job payments.
- Student ID card – this grants access to university facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Get it as quickly as you can.
Your introductory week at Imperial is essential
Your first week at Imperial holds significant importance. It’s when you’ll meet roommates, fellow students, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies. Enlist in activities that pique your interest.
Even if you’re somewhat introverted, make an effort to engage. I did, and I formed some of my closest friendships through campus tours and society events. Your initial week establishes the ambiance for your academic journey.
Getting around London: smart travel
During my first week, I struggled to grasp the Tube and buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was a memorable experience but rather disorganized – don’t repeat my blunder. Acquire a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to utilize the Tube and buses economically.
Walking remains a fantastic method to soak in the city and its culture. You’ll uncover hidden treasures as you roam.
Identify your relaxation spots
London can be emotionally taxing, particularly at the beginning. Securing a comfort zone is beneficial – mine is a nearby park that I visit daily for some peace. Another is the O2, merely 10 minutes away, where I indulge in a movie to unwind weekly.
Seek out your own cozy corners, whether it’s a cafe, bookstore, or a riverside bench. These spots provide a moment to decompress and rejuvenate.
And make sure to discover!
Get acquainted with the neighborhoods around your campus and residence. Pinpoint your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, as well as your preferred eateries or coffee haunts.
Explore landmarks, visit free museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus for an enjoyable view. Meander without a set plan – some of your most cherished memories will arise from getting slightly lost!
Final pointers before you plunge into student life at Imperial
- Carry a reusable bag – stores frequently charge for single-use ones.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas fall short against wind-driven rain.
- Attend unique events – they create wonderful stories.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – that’s a common sentiment initially.
You don’t have to have everything sorted from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I found myself when I commenced at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco excursion at a time.
