Stepping into London for the first time was quite a sensory overload. The city felt enormous, noisy, and bustling. Armed with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I had no idea where to start. If you’re getting ready to face this, there’s no need to fret. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimatize to London before your journey at Imperial begins, allowing you to savor the city.
Whether you’re coming early or just in time for the term to start, here’s what I wish I had known when I arrived.
Secure Your Accommodation
Lock in your housing ahead of time to dodge pricey hotel costs. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. The best accommodations disappear fast, so aim for a location close to your campus or along a convenient Tube line to ease your commute for those initial lectures.
Key Administrative Tasks
Upon your arrival, address these key necessities:
- Money transfers – As an international student, identify a trustworthy and cost-effective method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut can help mitigate unfavorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – Acquire one promptly to ensure you have mobile data for navigation in your new city.
- Bank account – While some banks may require a UK address, digital banks like Monzo or Starling offer quick setups and are student-friendly. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job income.
- Student ID card – This is vital for accessing campus resources, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.
Significance of Your First Week at Imperial
Your initial week is essential for crafting your student experience. Connect with your flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 clubs and societies run by students. Even if you’re reserved, challenge yourself to join in. This is how I met some of my dearest friends, and it set a positive tone for my university experience.
Navigating London Wisely
At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, which led to a nine-kilometer walk across London. It was unforgettable but a bit chaotic. Get your Student Oyster card and request the 18+ discount for affordable travel. Walking remains an excellent way to uncover the city’s hidden treasures.
Identify Your Go-To Spots
London can feel like a lot at first, so seek out a place of comfort. For me, it’s a local park and the O2, where I enjoy unwinding with a film. Find your own havens, be it a café, bookstore, or a bench by the riverside, to relax and recharge.
Discover the City
Familiarize yourself with your new environment, including nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and favorite dining spots. Visit iconic landmarks, explore free museums, and take pleasure in the city. Some of your fondest memories will arise from wandering a bit off the beaten path.
Final Suggestions for Beginning at Imperial
- Carry a reusable bag to steer clear of fees for disposable ones.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas aren’t always effective in windy conditions.
- Take part in unique events for unforgettable experiences.
- Don’t stress if you feel a bit lost; that’s perfectly normal at the start.
You don’t need to have everything sorted on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I once was. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and kick off your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
