Arriving in London for the first time was quite a lot to handle. The city seemed vast, noisy, and incredibly fast-paced. With just a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I felt uncertain about how to start. If you are about to go through this experience, there’s no need to fret. Here’s some guidance to assist you in settling into London before beginning at Imperial, allowing you to fully enjoy your new urban life.

Whether you reach weeks in advance or just before classes commence, here’s the advice I wish I had when I first arrived.

First things first: secure your accommodation

Arrange your lodgings early to prevent costly hotel stays. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. The best options disappear quickly, so aim for something close to your campus or along a reliable Tube line to avoid lengthy commutes for early morning lectures.

Essential life tasks: getting the basics sorted

As soon as you arrive in London, make these tasks a priority:

  • Money transfers – as an international student, find a trustworthy and economical way to send money from home. Platforms like Wise or Revolut provide more favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – obtain one straight away for mobile data and navigation in a new locale.
  • Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater to students. Open an account for your daily expenses and part-time job income.
  • Student ID card – crucial for gaining access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Make sure to collect it without delay.

The initial week at Imperial is vital

Your first week at Imperial is critical. This is when you will meet flatmates, fellow students, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and organizations. Even if you feel shy, challenge yourself to get involved. I found some of my closest friends at random campus gatherings. This week shapes the trajectory of your university experience.

Getting around London: travel intelligently

During my first week, I struggled with understanding the Tube and buses, resulting in me walking nine kilometers across London. It was chaotic yet unforgettable. Avoid my blunder by obtaining a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. However, exploring on foot remains an excellent way to discover the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Identify your go-to spots

London can feel emotionally intense. Having a comfort zone is beneficial. For me, it’s a nearby park where I go every day to unwind. My second location is the O2, which is just 10 minutes away, where I enjoy movies weekly. Discover your own retreats, such as a café or a bookstore, where you can relax and reset.

And remember to explore!

Familiarize yourself with the neighborhoods around your campus and residence. Find your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries. Check out famous sites, visit free museums, and take in the views from a red double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will come from getting a bit lost!

Final pointers before you plunge into Imperial student life

  • Carry a reusable bag – single-use ones usually come with a fee.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas often fail in windy weather.
  • Join unusual events – they lead to fantastic stories.
  • Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s a common feeling at the beginning.

You don’t have to have everything sorted out on day one. If you are reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was on my first day at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
