When I first arrived in London, I was amazed by its enormity and vibrancy. The city felt loud, bustling, and a little intimidating. With nothing but a suitcase and Google Maps, I was overwhelmed. If you’re anticipating this experience, there’s no need to fret. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimate to London before you start at Imperial, so you can relish your new urban life.
No matter if you arrive weeks in advance or just in time for the term, here’s the advice I wish I had received.
Secure Housing in Advance
Prevent expensive hotel expenses by arranging your housing ahead of time. I was lucky, but many aren’t, as the best accommodations fill up quickly. Try to reside near your campus or a convenient Tube line to avoid long journeys for early classes.
Critical Life Tasks
Once you are in London, promptly tackle these important tasks:
- Money Transfers – As an overseas student, discover a reliable and cost-effective method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut can help you steer clear of unfavorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM Card – Obtain one right away to ensure you have data for navigation in a new city.
- Bank Account – Some banks may require a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and accommodating for students. Open an account for daily expenses and part-time job deposits.
- Student ID Card – Essential for entering campus facilities, libraries, and accessing student discounts. Make sure to pick it up as soon as possible.
The Significance of Your First Week at Imperial
Your initial week at Imperial holds great importance. It’s when you’ll meet flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Engage with Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and become a member of those that pique your interest.
Even if you’re reserved, challenge yourself to take part. I did, and I met some of my closest friends during spontaneous campus tours and society events. This week shapes the start of your university experience.
Smart Travel in London
<pDuring my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was an unforgettable experience, albeit chaotic. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for affordable travel on the Tube and buses.
Walking remains an excellent way to absorb the city’s culture and uncover hidden treasures.
Identify Your Comfort Zones
London can be a lot to handle, especially at first. Having a go-to place can be soothing. For me, it’s the nearby park where I visit daily to unwind. My second location is the local O2, where I enjoy a movie weekly.
Discover your own retreats, be it a cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench, to de-stress and recharge.
Discover the City
Get familiar with your new environment around campus and home. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries or coffee shops.
Check out renowned landmarks, tour free museums, and hop on a red double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from taking a little detour!
Final Reminders Before Diving into Imperial Life
- Carry a reusable bag to dodge charges for single-use alternatives.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas do little in windy weather.
- Participate in quirky events; they often lead to the best stories.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented; it’s perfectly normal at the outset.
You don’t have to have everything sorted out on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I stood when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
