By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing

Arriving in London for the first time felt like an overwhelming experience. The city appeared vast, noisy, and bustling. With just a suitcase and Google Maps, I wasn’t quite sure where to start. If you find yourself in a similar situation, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to help you adjust to London before your time at Imperial begins, allowing you to relish the experience of being a newcomer in the city.

Whether you arrive several weeks ahead or just before the semester kicks off, here’s the advice I wish I had received upon my arrival.

Secure Accommodation

Prevent costly hotel expenses by finding accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone gets this chance. The best options vanish quickly! Try to find a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to avoid lengthy commutes to morning lectures.

Essential Life Admin Tasks

Upon your arrival in London, take care of these vital tasks promptly:

  • Money Transfers – As an international student, discover a trustworthy and economical method for transferring money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM Card – Navigating a new area can be tough without data. Acquire a UK SIM card and a data plan soon after landing.
  • Bank Account – While some banks need a UK address, digital banking options like Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater to students. Open an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.
  • Student ID Card – This card allows access to campus facilities, libraries, and discounts for students. Collect it as soon as you can.

Your First Week at Imperial Matters

Your initial week at Imperial is vital for your experience as a student. It’s when you’ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Engage in Welcome Week to check out over 350 clubs and societies led by students. Even if you feel shy, make an effort to join in. I encountered some of my closest friends during campus tours and society stalls. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.

Getting Around London: Smart Travel Tips

During my first week, I struggled to navigate the Tube and buses and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was an unforgettable but chaotic experience. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced fares on the Tube and buses. Walking remains a fantastic way to uncover the city’s hidden treasures.

Identify Your Comfort Zones

London can feel emotionally intense, especially at first. Finding a comfort place aids in relaxation – mine is a nearby park where I visit daily to unwind. My secondary spot is the O2, a mere 10 minutes away, where I enjoy films weekly. Discover your own places, such as a café, bookstore, or a riverside bench, to unwind and refresh.

Discover the City

Acquaint yourself with the areas surrounding your campus and residence. Identify your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining or coffee venues. Visit iconic landmarks, explore free museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus for a scenic experience. Some of your fondest memories will result from wandering a bit off the beaten path!

Last-Minute Tips Before Starting at Imperial

  • Bring a reusable bag – shops charge for single-use ones.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas are ineffective against wind.
  • Participate in unique events – they create the best stories.
  • Don’t stress if you feel confused – it’s normal at the beginning.

You don’t need to have everything figured out by day one. If you’re reading this, you are already ahead of where I was when I started at Imperial. Take a deep breath, get your Oyster card, and begin your London journey one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
