By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing
Upon my arrival in London for the first time, the city appeared vast, bustling, rapid, and somewhat intimidating. With only a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I felt disoriented. If you are about to face this, don’t fret. Here’s how to initiate your new life in London before commencing at Imperial, allowing you to relish the city.
No matter whether you get here weeks in advance or just before the semester starts, here’s the guidance I wish I had received when I arrived.
First Task: Secure Housing
Steer clear of expensive hotels by organizing your accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone can say the same. The most desirable spots get booked fast! Target a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize long travels for early classes.
Necessary Administrative Tasks
As soon as you arrive in London, take care of these crucial tasks without delay:
- Money transfers – As an overseas student, discover an affordable method to send money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide competitive rates.
- UK SIM card – Obtain one right away to ensure you have internet access for navigation in a new environment.
- Bank account – Some banks may ask for a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are fast and student-friendly. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.
- Student ID card – This is essential for gaining access to university buildings, libraries, and student discounts. Make sure to pick it up as soon as you can.
Significance of Your Initial Week at Imperial
Your first week at Imperial is crucial. It’s the time to meet roommates, classmates, and potential friends. Engage in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re introverted, make an effort to join in. I formed lasting friendships during campus tours and society booths. This week lays the foundation for your university experience.
Intelligent Travel in London
At first, I didn’t grasp the Tube or buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable yet chaotic. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced travel costs. Walking remains an excellent way to navigate the city and find hidden treasures.
Identify Your Comfort Zones
London can feel overwhelming. Having a comfort zone is beneficial – mine is a local park. I frequent it daily to unwind. The O2, only 10 minutes away, is another preferred spot for movies and relaxation. Discover your own venues, such as a café or bookstore, to recharge and refresh.
Discover the City
Familiarize yourself with areas surrounding your campus and residence. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries. Check out iconic landmarks, free museums, and take a ride on a double-decker bus for the scenery. Some of your fondest memories will stem from wandering without a specific plan.
Final Advice for Starting at Imperial
- Carry a reusable bag – stores charge for single-use ones.
- Get a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t practical in windy weather.
- Participate in unique events – they lead to fantastic stories.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s typical initially.
You don’t have to have everything figured out on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I stood. Take a deep breath, pick up your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
