Arriving in London was, at first, quite daunting. The expanse of the city felt immense, noisy, and rapidly moving. Equipped with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I experienced a sense of disorientation. If you’re facing this soon, there’s no need to panic. Here’s how to adjust to life in London before starting at Imperial, allowing you to embrace your new urban experience.

Whether you’re coming in early or just shortly before classes begin, here are the tips I wish I had received.

Secure Accommodation

Prevent high hotel expenses by arranging your housing ahead of time. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. Look for a place close to campus or on a dependable Tube route to minimize lengthy travels for early morning classes.

Critical Administrative Tasks

Upon your arrival, tackle these key matters:

  • Money transfers – International students often need budget-friendly options for sending money. Applications such as Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – This is vital for navigation and communication. Obtain one as soon as possible.
  • Bank account – While some banks require a UK address, digital options like Monzo or Starling are fast and favorable for students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.
  • Student ID card – This allows access to campus buildings, libraries, and various student discounts. Be sure to pick it up quickly.

Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your first week is essential for meeting housemates, classmates, and potential friends. Take part in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies. Even if you’re reserved, join in. I formed strong friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. This week lays the groundwork for your academic journey.

Navigating London Wisely

At first, I didn’t grasp the Tube or bus system and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. Prevent this by acquiring a Student Oyster card and requesting the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. However, walking remains a fantastic way to uncover hidden treasures.

Identify Your Comfortable Spaces

London can feel overwhelming. Locate a comforting venue, such as a park, café, or bookstore, where you can unwind and recharge. My favorites are a nearby park and the O2 for movie outings.

Discover the City

Get to know the areas surrounding your campus and residence. Find local grocery stores, pharmacies, parks, and your preferred dining places. Visit iconic sites, free museums, and relish the urban landscape. Some of your fondest moments will arise from exploration.

Final Recommendations

  • Carry a reusable bag to evade charges for disposable ones.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas are ineffective in strong winds.
  • Participate in unique events for unforgettable memories.
  • If you’re feeling disoriented, don’t stress; it’s a common feeling at the beginning.

You don’t need to have it all sorted by day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already on the right track. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
