Stepping into London for the first time was quite a lot to take in. The city appeared enormous, bustling, and dynamic. Armed only with a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt confused about where to start. If you’re about to embark on this journey, there’s no need to stress. Here’s how to acclimate to London before commencing your studies at Imperial, so you can relish your new experience in the city.

Whether you arrive weeks ahead of time or just prior to the term kicking off, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

Secure your accommodation

Steer clear of costly hotel reservations by arranging your housing in advance. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. The best choices go fast, so strive for a location close to campus or along a dependable Tube line to minimize long commutes for early lectures.

Essential life tasks to take care of

Once you’re in London, tackle these necessities without delay:

  • Money transfers – as an overseas student, find a dependable method for transferring funds. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – acquire one swiftly to ensure you have mobile data for navigation in an unfamiliar city.
  • Bank account – some banks require a UK address, yet digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and student-friendly. Open an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.
  • Student ID card – crucial for gaining access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.

The significance of your initial week at Imperial

Your inaugural week at Imperial is vital. It’s the time to meet flatmates, classmates, and future pals. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re introverted, challenge yourself to join in. I made some of my closest friends during random campus tours and society booths. This week lays the groundwork for your university experience.

Travel wisely in London

During my first week, I trekked nine kilometers across London due to a mix-up with the Tube and buses. It was memorable yet chaotic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel economically. Walking remains an excellent way to uncover the city and stumble upon hidden treasures.

Identify your comfort zones

London can be emotionally intense. Having a cozy spot is beneficial. For me, it’s the nearby park and the O2 for weekly movie outings. Discover your own places, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to unwind and recharge.

Discover the city

Familiarize yourself with your surroundings near campus and your residence. Explore local grocery stores, pharmacies, parks, and favorite eateries. Visit iconic landmarks, free museums, and hop on a double-decker bus for a scenic view. Some of your fondest memories will arise from getting a bit lost.

Final pointers for starting at Imperial

  • Carry a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use options.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket for those blustery, rainy days.
  • Participate in unique events for unforgettable tales.
  • Don’t fret if you feel disoriented; it’s normal initially.

You don’t need every detail sorted on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already further than I was at this stage. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and commence your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco trip at a time.
