Searching for postgraduate housing in London as an Imperial student can quickly feel daunting. The city presents a wide array of accommodation choices, neighborhoods, and pricing, complicating the process of identifying the truly significant factors.

During my own search, I realized that most online guidance was either too generic or no longer relevant. In actuality, obtaining accommodation in London is fast-paced, competitive, and at times perplexing, particularly when juggling budget, security, commute, and personal lifestyle preferences.

Imperial students additionally confront the decision of selecting between private student housing and independent renting, each providing unique living experiences.

This is how I managed my search for postgraduate accommodation in London and what I learned to be crucial in discovering your ideal home.

Comprehending your choices

Initially, it’s essential to grasp the varieties of postgraduate accommodation accessible. Many students consider private housing, and Imperial aids in this process through its Student Accommodation Office and resources like Imperial Home Solutions, which showcase verified private listings to facilitate navigating a bustling market.

Students also check out platforms such as Zoopla and Amber, and evaluate purpose-built student accommodation options like Chapter and iQ. Each choice differs in price, flexibility, and community atmosphere, so the selection is based on your priorities and way of life.

Considerations when searching for postgraduate accommodation

The most difficult aspect of securing accommodation was weighing various factors at once. I needed to assess rent, transport connections, safety, and everyday convenience—such as proximity to supermarkets, gyms, and facilities—since these minor details significantly affect daily living.

I was surprised by how swiftly desirable options disappeared. I found places that suited my budget and were close to campus, only to realize they were gone within a day or two, making the experience feel hurried and competitive.

There were occasions when I nearly chose a place but changed my mind. For example, I considered an apartment in Ealing near Imperial’s undergraduate accommodations, in a modern building, near amenities like Sainsbury’s, and adjacent to a train station. However, the commute would have been longer and pricier without a student travel card, leading me to pass on it.

I also looked into options like Wood Lane Studios on Imperial’s White City Campus, adjacent to Westfield shopping center, but ultimately selected Chapter Portobello for its blend of convenience and accessibility. I’m near grocery outlets and can avail of a free shuttle bus service to Imperial campuses. However, while the location is advantageous for commuting to campus, reaching central London requires a 15-minute walk to the nearest Underground station, which can be less comfortable, particularly when alone in the evenings. Still, being in proximity to Portobello Market brings a lively social element to the area, presenting both benefits and drawbacks.

Key considerations when selecting accommodation in London

Throughout this journey, I came to understand that while cost is significant, it shouldn’t be the only criterion, as lower prices do not always equate to better value, and higher costs do not always assure safety or comfort.

Location and transportation significantly influence the decision—being near campus is convenient, but dependable transport links are often more crucial, providing flexibility and easing commutes, particularly during winter when darkness falls early and extended walks can be difficult.
