Searching for postgraduate housing in London as an Imperial student can swiftly turn daunting. The city presents a wide range of living options, neighborhoods, and pricing tiers, making it challenging to identify which aspects genuinely matter.
Throughout my search, I discovered that much of the online guidance was either broad or outdated. In truth, acquiring accommodation in London is brisk, competitive, and occasionally perplexing, particularly when aiming to juggle budget, safety, commuting, and lifestyle preferences all at once.
For students at Imperial, the difficulty is heightened by the decision between private student housing and independent rentals, each providing unique living experiences.
This is how I maneuvered through the search for postgraduate housing in London and what I realized is truly significant when seeking a new place to call home.
Grasping your choices
Initially, it’s vital to comprehend the various types of postgraduate housing that are available. Numerous students consider private accommodations, and Imperial extends support via its Student Accommodation Office and platforms like Imperial Home Solutions, which offer verified private listings to facilitate the process in a competitive landscape.
Students also utilize platforms like Zoopla and Amber, while considering purpose-built student accommodations such as Chapter and iQ. Each choice varies in cost, flexibility, and community vibe, thus the decision hinges on your preferences and way of life.
Factors to ponder when searching for postgraduate housing
The most daunting aspect of finding accommodation was weighing multiple factors at once. I had to assess rent, transportation options, safety, and everyday convenience—like proximity to grocery stores, gyms, and other amenities—as these minor details significantly influence daily life.
I was taken aback by how rapidly desirable options would vanish. I stumbled upon places within my budget and near campus, only to witness them disappear within a day or two, making the experience feel urgent and competitive.
There were moments when I nearly selected a spot but had second thoughts. For instance, I considered a flat in Ealing close to Imperial’s undergraduate housing, with shops and a train station in proximity. However, the longer and pricier commute without a student travel card led me to pass on it.
I also looked into Wood Lane Studios on Imperial’s White City Campus, but ultimately opted for Chapter Portobello due to its blend of convenience and accessibility. I’m situated close to grocery stores and have access to a complimentary shuttle bus to Imperial campuses. Nevertheless, commuting to central London requires a 15-minute walk to the nearest Underground station, which can feel less convenient, particularly in the evenings. Still, being adjacent to Portobello Market brings a lively social element, with both upsides and downsides.
Key considerations when selecting a place to stay in London
During this entire journey, I recognized that cost is significant, but not the only determining element. Lower prices do not invariably equate to better value, and higher prices do not assure safety or comfort.
Location and transportation are paramount—proximity to campus is convenient, but dependable transport links are often more critical, offering flexibility and easing commutes, especially during winter when it gets dark early.
Safety is crucial when contemplating daily habits, such as returning home after night classes. Opting for an area where you feel at ease and secure is vital. Neighborhoods like White City and Hammersmith are favored among Imperial students for their connectivity and vibrant ambiance.
