“One of the most unexpected elements of my journey at Imperial is that it goes beyond academics – it encompasses the individuals, the diverse roles you can take on, the ongoing learning experiences, and the lifestyle you develop around the campus.”
After finishing my undergraduate studies in Civil Engineering at Imperial, and now entering my second year of a PhD in Transport, I’ve had the opportunity to reflect on my time here. Many facets of studying at Imperial have been surprisingly different from what I anticipated. Here are five unexpected aspects I found while studying at Imperial.
1. Imperial is more globally diverse and inclusive than expected
Prior to enrolling at Imperial, I believed the student community would be mainly composed of UK students, and as an international student, I might feel somewhat like an outsider. Contrary to this belief, my reality has been quite the opposite. Imperial boasts an incredibly international community, welcoming students from various cultural and academic backgrounds worldwide.
The everyday familiarity of this diversity was unforeseen. Being surrounded by individuals with different viewpoints enriches the educational experience, making Imperial not only global but also inclusive and hospitable.
2. PhD life still includes coursework
I had initially thought that pursuing a PhD meant concentrating exclusively on research, without any further classes. To my surprise, there are numerous structured learning opportunities available.
There are workshops on teaching techniques, research skills development, presentation abilities, and programming. While I remained within Civil Engineering for my PhD, specializing in Transport allowed me to participate in classes with Transport Master’s students, enhancing my expertise. I didn’t anticipate that PhD life would provide such abundant learning opportunities through courses and training, which I have greatly valued.
3. A variety of roles beyond “student”
I was taken aback by the numerous roles I could engage in while also focusing on my studies. I assumed that university life at Imperial would center around research and academia, but there are countless ways to participate beyond that.
While pursuing my PhD, I’ve served as a graduate teaching assistant, a student content creator, and a student ambassador, each role offering a unique perspective on the university experience at Imperial. Teaching boosts my confidence in articulating concepts, while content creation and ambassador activities enable me to connect with wider audiences and contribute to the student community in distinctive ways. Being an Imperial student is not a singular identity.
4. South Kensington is more than merely a campus area
I hadn’t expected the South Kensington Campus to play such a crucial role in my student life. At first, I viewed it just as the university’s address, but gradually, I recognized how the area significantly enriches daily living at Imperial.
Following classes or meetings, there are numerous nearby attractions to discover, including museums, parks, cafés, and restaurants. It’s easy to take leisurely walks, spend quality time with friends, or unwind after a hectic day. This equilibrium is essential, particularly during busy times. South Kensington is not merely where I study – it’s a vital component of my student life experience.
5. PhD students are more engaged in societies than anticipated
I presumed societies were predominantly for undergraduates, and that PhD students would be too occupied or disengaged to take part, but I was delighted to learn that this isn’t true!
I became a member of the Cheerleading and Chinese Drama Society, and through their events and activities, I met fellow PhD students who were also actively participating. This reshaped my understanding of postgraduate life, demonstrating that even while pursuing a PhD, individuals find time for hobbies, friendships, and communities outside their research. This is invaluable, contributing to a more comprehensive student experience.
In reflecting on my journey at Imperial, the most astonishing realization is that it has never been solely about academics. While study and research hold considerable importance, so do the individuals, the multiple roles you can adopt, the ongoing learning experiences, and the life you cultivate around the campus. These elements were unforeseen prior to my arrival, and they are now among the aspects I cherish the most.
