If you’re thinking about applying to Imperial, this is probably a choice you’ve been mulling over for some time. Acknowledging that you have one key chance to submit your application can be intimidating. I experienced similar feelings when applying for my MSc Business Analytics program, so here’s a guide on the application process and tips for navigating it successfully.

Choosing Your Master’s Course

This is a significant choice, especially for applicants to Imperial Business School, as you can submit an application for only one Master’s program per admission cycle. Reflect on what you wish to pursue beyond your prior studies and how the course matches your interests and aspirations. In my BSc in Business Analytics, I established a solid base in analytical tools and entrepreneurship. I aspired to stay in this domain without duplicating content or limiting my options too early. The flexible module offerings at Imperial caught my attention. The modules provided insights into new fields like logistics, supply chain analytics, and leadership in analytics, corresponding with my interests and future goals.

Throughout my undergraduate years, I aimed to work as a business intelligence analyst, although I wasn’t focused on a particular sector. I wanted to investigate various domains before dedicating myself to a full-time position. Attending Imperial and engaging with varied modules and methodologies helped me identify my passion for fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) analytics. This journey brought clarity and was equally significant as the technical skills I acquired.

Grasping Master’s Course Entry Criteria

The entry criteria can appear daunting, particularly with the esteemed reputation of Imperial. I suggest measuring your experiences against the course prerequisites. I discovered that I met most criteria through my undergraduate studies. Master’s programs do not require you to be an authority; rather, they seek to understand how you will apply and enhance your capabilities. Comprehending the expectations of the course renders the requirements feel more attainable.

Reflecting at this point, most of my anxiety originated from misconceptions rather than the actual criteria. Diligently reviewing the course information and aligning your experiences with the requirements may reveal that you are more equipped than you realized.

English Proficiency Criteria

International applicants should take the English proficiency criteria into account, as you might need to undertake an exam like IELTS depending on where you obtained your previous degree. I did not need to take additional tests since I studied in the UK. If you need to fulfill English language requirements, consult Imperial’s website for accepted assessments and credentials. Imperial also provides Pre-sessional courses to assist in your academic English preparation.

Writing Your Postgraduate Personal Statement

“Your uniqueness, inquisitiveness, and readiness to learn offer you a competitive advantage in your personal statement, so don’t worry about achieving perfection!”

Many candidates strive to present their experiences impeccably, but this can lead to excessively refined responses. Your experiences can serve as assets if leveraged effectively. I dedicated considerable time to my personal statement, contemplating my career trajectory, reasons for choosing Imperial, and how my previous experiences intertwine with my goals.

What aided me was cataloging everything I had accomplished during my undergraduate degree, including modules, projects, societies, and volunteer work. I reflected on my involvement in data visualization, my interest in media and AI, and my leadership roles, all of which shaped my analytical outlook. I connected these experiences directly to each question rather than using vague statements. For instance, instead of broadly claiming ‘I am enthusiastic about data,’ I concentrated on specific projects and experiences, elucidating their impact on my interests and ambitions.

Being genuine and expressive is important, but avoid excessive description. Refined or general responses contribute little value, particularly with numerous AI-generated responses lacking true individuality.
