If you are contemplating submitting an application to Imperial, this is likely a choice you have been pondering for a while. The notion of having one primary opportunity to apply can seem intimidating. I experienced the same feelings when I applied for my MSc in Business Analytics, so here is a guide to the application journey and how to successfully navigate it.

Selecting Your Master’s Program

This is a vital choice, particularly if you are applying to Imperial Business School, as you can submit an application for only one Master’s program per admissions cycle. Think about what you wish to delve into further and how the program corresponds with your interests and aspirations. Throughout my BSc in Business Analytics, I built a solid foundation in analytical tools and entrepreneurship. I aimed to continue in this domain without rehashing material or narrowing my focus too quickly. The structure of Imperial’s course, with its adaptable module options, appealed to me. It provided insight into fields such as logistics, supply chain analytics, and leadership, aligning with my aspirations.

During my undergraduate studies, I envisioned becoming a business intelligence analyst but was not tied to a specific industry. I wanted to explore my interests prior to committing to a full-time position. Studying at Imperial and engaging with various modules and methodologies enabled me to pinpoint my strengths and interests, particularly in FMCG analytics. This exploration was just as beneficial as the technical skills I acquired.

Familiarizing Yourself with Master’s Program Entry Requirements

The entry criteria can seem daunting, especially given Imperial’s reputation. I suggest comparing your experiences with the course prerequisites. I found that I satisfied many of the requirements through my undergraduate education. Master’s programs do not expect you to be a specialist; they are interested in how you will apply and enhance your skills. Grasping the course requirements can make them seem more attainable.

Much of my anxiety stemmed from assumptions rather than actual prerequisites. Thoroughly reviewing the course page and aligning your experiences with the requirements may show you that you are more prepared than you realize.

English Language Proficiency Requirements

International applicants should note the English language proficiency requirements. Depending on where you obtained your degree, you may need to take an exam like IELTS. I did not have to take additional tests as I studied in the UK. If necessary, Imperial offers Pre-sessional courses to assist with your academic English.

Crafting Your Postgraduate Personal Statement

“Your uniqueness, curiosity, and eagerness to learn provide you with a competitive advantage in your personal statement, so don’t overly stress about making your responses flawless!”

Many attempt to present their experiences flawlessly; however, this can come across as inauthentic. Make good use of your experiences. I dedicated considerable time to my personal statement, contemplating my career path, motivations for choosing Imperial, and how my previous experiences aligned with my objectives.

I enumerated everything I accomplished during my undergraduate studies, including modules, projects, and extracurricular activities. I reflected on my work in data visualization, my interest in media and AI, and my leadership roles. I connected these experiences to each prompt, steering clear of generic remarks. Rather than stating ‘I am enthusiastic about data,’ I concentrated on specific projects and how they shaped my interests and ambitions.

Being expressive and genuine is important, but avoid excessive detail. Overly polished or generic responses provide little benefit. I noted my experiences, lessons learned, and mistakes, then iteratively improved my draft. Having someone you trust review your statement can lend a new perspective.

Obtaining References for Your Application

Select your referees thoughtfully, considering how well they are acquainted with you and your work. I chose one referee based on my interests and another based on my academic and career trajectory. One was a professor who instructed me in media and AI, while the other was my professor in data visualization. This combination showcased both my passion and academic capabilities.

I consulted with my referees before listing them in my application.
