Residing in London is akin to giving a young child a credit card in a toy store – thrilling yet easy to overindulge. While London may appear intimidating at first, it’s entirely possible to thrive here without going over budget. Let’s delve into how to experience London while keeping expenses in check.
Initial impressions: from chaos to possibility
At first, the size, vibrancy, and variety of London can feel overwhelming. Yet, after a fortnight, you’re likely to be captivated by the city’s allure. Its superb connections via the Tube, buses, and trains facilitate exploration of London and its surroundings. The myriad of cultures, cuisines, and experiences guarantees that London offers something for everyone to feel at home.
Housing: navigating your highest cost wisely
Your housing will likely be your most significant recurring expense. Convenient student accommodations can be expensive and are snatched up quickly, making early booking essential for landing the best rates.
For cost-saving, look into private rentals. Platforms such as SpareRoom, AmberStudent, and University Living are popular choices. Sharing a flat with like-minded peers can lower costs and provide companionship. Emphasize safety, comfort, and easy access to public transport. Imperial provides various tools and assistance for locating private housing, so utilize those resources during your hunt.
If you prefer solitude and fewer obligations, purpose-built student housing might be a better fit, but remember they can be more expensive, so adjust your budget appropriately.
Student discounts: your hidden asset
One of London’s best secrets? Student discounts are ubiquitous. Almost every chain and many local businesses provide them. Honest Burgers in South Kensington offers a generous 20% discount to students, ideal for campus lunch breaks.
Before you get to London, download discount apps for students like UNiDAYS and Student Beans. These platforms provide savings on clothing, electronics, eateries, and subscriptions like Spotify and Amazon Prime. Always have your student ID with you – you’ll be amazed at the discount opportunities that present themselves when you start inquiring!
Ways to lower Tube fares with a railcard
As a student, you can obtain a 16–25 Railcard for reduced national rail travel and a student Oyster card for urban journeys. Request assistance from staff at any Tube station to connect your railcard to your Oyster card and enjoy a 30% discount on off-peak Tube fares! Personally, I save about £50 a month on travel using this method, a trick I wish I had learned sooner.
Biking is becoming increasingly popular, with many Imperial students choosing second-hand bikes and utilizing London’s growing network of cycle lanes to save further on their journeys.
Concluding thoughts: enjoying London on your terms
Residing in London doesn’t necessitate sacrificing your budget or experiences. Plan wisely, take advantage of discounts, and engage with the student community, and you’ll soon realize that London is one of the most fulfilling places to call home!
