Residing in London is akin to handing a toddler a credit card in a toy shop – thrilling yet prone to excess spending. London might appear intimidating at first, but it is possible to enjoy yourself while adhering to a budget. Let’s delve into ways to savor London without breaking the bank.

Initial impressions: from chaos to chance

Upon your arrival, the vastness, vibrancy, and variety of London may be overwhelming. Nevertheless, within a couple of weeks, you might find yourself enchanted by its allure. The city boasts excellent connectivity: the Tube, buses, and trains will take you throughout London and beyond. With an eclectic mix of cultures, cuisines, and experiences, London provides something for everyone to feel at home.

Housing: smartly navigating your top expense

Your housing will likely be your most substantial monthly cost. While student accommodations are convenient, they can be pricey and fill up rapidly, making early bookings essential to snagging the best deals.

To cut costs, think about private rentals. Sites such as SpareRoom, AmberStudent, and University Living are widely used choices. Sharing a flat with friends can help lower expenses and offer companionship. Always focus on safety, comfort, and convenient public transport access. Imperial provides numerous resources and support for securing private housing, so make sure to utilize these during your search.

If you prefer having your own area with fewer obligations, purpose-built student housing might be a better option for you, although it tends to be pricier, so plan your budget accordingly.

Student discounts: your hidden asset

One of London’s best-kept secrets? Student discounts are ubiquitous. Nearly every chain and many independent shops provide them. Honest Burgers in South Kensington offers an appealing 20% discount for students, an ideal choice for campus lunch breaks.

Prior to your arrival in London, make sure to download student discount apps such as UNiDAYS and Student Beans. These platforms offer discounts on clothing, electronics, eateries, and subscriptions like Spotify and Amazon Prime. Always have your student ID on hand – you’ll likely be amazed by the savings opportunities you encounter when you start inquiring!

How to access cheaper Tube fares with a railcard

As a student, you can obtain a 16–25 Railcard for discounted national rail travel and a student Oyster card for commuting within the city. Request staff at any Tube station to link your railcard to your Oyster card for a 30% discount on off-peak Tube fares. Personally, I save around £50 monthly on travel with this method, and I wish I had discovered it sooner.

Cycling is also becoming increasingly popular, with many Imperial students opting for second-hand bicycles and utilizing London’s expanding cycle paths to cut down on commute costs.

Concluding thoughts: experiencing London on your own terms

Residing in London does not necessitate sacrificing your budget or experiences. Plan thoughtfully, utilize your discounts, and stay engaged with the student community. You will soon discover that London is one of the most fulfilling places to reside!
