Relocating from a rural island in Spain to the largest city in Europe was intimidating, yet the last 18 months in London have been immensely fulfilling and enjoyable.

London is a rich, diverse, historical, and lively metropolis boasting a vast array of restaurants, events, and attractions. Discovering the city is always an adventure, although adjusting to a new country may come with its challenges. Here are some insights I’ve gained as an international student in London, along with suggestions for activities once you’re settled in.

Relocating to London as a postgraduate student

The initial step to moving to London is identifying the ideal place to live. I turned to Instagram, TikTok, and online discussion boards to investigate different neighborhoods. Camden Town is famous for its vibrant nightlife, Hackney is an up-and-coming area, while Putney is a calm, green residential community.

Having visited London prior to starting my Master’s, I toured these neighborhoods firsthand before selecting Putney. My flatmates (whom I met during my undergraduate studies) and I utilized platforms like SpareRoom and Rightmove to secure budget-friendly house shares, arranged virtual viewings, and discovered a lovely flat close to Putney Heath.

Activities to enjoy in London

Once you’ve settled, a plethora of possibilities lies ahead. The tricky part is deciding which activities to engage in and carving out time for everything!

Imperial’s South Kensington Campus is located in the Albertopolis region, celebrating artistry, manufacturing, and science. Close by are the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum, and the V&A Museum. These museums are wonderful for exploration, with some open until late on Fridays. The V&A also hosts a monthly V&A Late, turning into a festive gathering with beverages and live performances!

I also love discovering East London areas such as Canary Wharf, Hackney, and Isle of Dogs, rich in history and culture. My favorite destination is Trinity Buoy Wharf, a creative oasis featuring art studios and the original lighthouse lab where Michael Faraday conducted his work.

Dining out in London

London presents plenty of deals if you know where to search, with numerous choices for affordable, delicious cuisine. I’ve curated a list of eateries with bargains throughout the city.

In South Kensington, Wright Brothers provides an Oyster Happy Hour, where oysters are just £1 each—ideal for seafood enthusiasts missing their hometown flavors. Tooting in South London is renowned for its culinary scene, with Tooting Market and Tooting Broadway Market showcasing an array of global dishes. I strongly recommend checking out these markets!

Escaping the city for a break

While London’s dynamism adds to its appeal, occasionally the Tube and throngs of people can become too much. Luckily, London’s rail and coach system facilitates easy escapes from the city.

My favorite destinations include Surrey and Kent. Canterbury is a historic locale with student-friendly attractions. In Surrey, the RHS Wisley botanical garden offers a charming outing during the summer.

Ultimately, London is a dynamic city brimming with opportunities and experiences to uncover. Make sure to explore everything it has to offer during your time at Imperial!
