The choice to transition from a rural island in Spain to the biggest city in Europe was intimidating. Nevertheless, the last 18 months spent in London have been the most rewarding and enjoyable of my existence.

London is a lively, diverse, historical metropolis with a vast selection of eateries, events, and attractions—navigating it is always a journey! However, adjusting to life in a foreign country can be tough. Here are some insights I’ve gained as an international student relocating to London, along with some advice on what to do once you’re settled in.

Relocating to London as a postgraduate student

The initial step in relocating to London involves discovering the perfect place to call home. I utilized Instagram, TikTok, and online communities to investigate different neighborhoods in London that appeared attractive. I found Camden Town’s vibrant nightlife, Hackney’s developing scene, and Putney’s serene, green residential atmosphere.

Having visited London prior to starting my Master’s, I checked out these areas in person before settling on Putney. My flatmates (whom I encountered during undergraduate studies) and I utilized platforms like SpareRoom and Rightmove to locate reasonable house shares, arranged online viewings with landlords, and eventually secured a lovely flat near Putney Heath.

Activities to enjoy in London

After you’ve settled in, an array of opportunities and events beckons—deciding which activities to partake in and fitting them into your timetable is the true challenge!

Imperial’s South Kensington Campus is situated in the Albertopolis district, an area that celebrates art, industry, and science. Close by are fabulous museums like the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum, and the V&A Museum. These institutions are delightful to explore, and some even remain open late on Fridays. On the last Friday of every month, the V&A organizes a V&A Late, turning the museum into a dynamic venue with drinks and live performances!

Apart from visiting museums, I relish discovering East London neighborhoods like Canary Wharf, Hackney, and Isle of Dogs. This area is brimming with historical and artistic landmarks, making it an intriguing place to roam. My favorite location is Trinity Buoy Wharf—constructed on a former canning warehouse, it now hosts a startup focused on crafting temporary structures from shipping containers. The complex celebrates innovative manufacturing and accommodates art studios, including the original lighthouse lab where Michael Faraday worked!

Dining out in London

London presents excellent food deals if you know where to search. Throughout my stay here, I’ve created a list of dining spots with offers that make eating out more budget-friendly.

One such venue is located in South Kensington, where Wright Brothers provides an Oyster Happy Hour, offering oysters for just £1 each—a remarkable offer, particularly if you long for the taste of local seafood!

Tooting in South London is also renowned for its culinary scene. Tooting Market and Tooting Broadway Market are large indoor street food markets featuring a diverse array of cuisines. If you’re seeking food that reminds you of home, I strongly suggest checking out Tooting’s food markets!

Taking a respite from the city

Even though London’s urban life is delightful, at times the Tube can be overly noisy or the streets excessively crowded. Luckily, London boasts excellent train and coach networks, making it simple to escape the city for a weekend.

My preferred destinations are Surrey and Kent. Canterbury is a stunning medieval town in southern England, rich in history and equipped with student-friendly spots. In Surrey, the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) features a large botanical garden in Wisley, ideal for a summer outing.

In conclusion, London is a dynamic city brimming with opportunities and places to investigate, so take your time to uncover all it has to offer during your tenure at Imperial!
