Transitioning from a rural island in Spain to the largest city in Europe was intimidating, yet my 18 months in London have proven to be remarkably fulfilling and enjoyable.

London is an eclectic, multicultural, historically rich, and lively metropolis boasting a myriad of restaurants, events, and attractions – every exploration feels like a new adventure! However, adapting to life in a foreign country can pose its challenges. Below, I share some insights gained as an international student in London, along with tips and advice for acclimating.

Relocating to London as a postgraduate student

The initial step in relocating to London is securing the ideal spot to call home. I turned to Instagram, TikTok, and online discussion boards to investigate different neighborhoods within London. Camden Town is famed for its vibrant nightlife, Hackney is a burgeoning area in east London, and Putney offers a serene, green residential environment.

Having visited London prior to commencing my Master’s program, I personally explored these districts before opting for Putney. My flatmates (who I met during my undergraduate years) and I utilized platforms like SpareRoom and Rightmove to locate budget-friendly shared accommodations, organized virtual viewings with landlords, and ultimately discovered a lovely flat near Putney Heath.

Activities in London

Once you’re settled, a plethora of opportunities and events is at your fingertips – the task lies in selecting which pursuits to partake in and carving out time for them all!

Imperial’s South Kensington Campus is situated within the Albertopolis region, an area that honors art, industry, and science. Close by are fantastic museums such as the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum, and the V&A Museum. These museums are excellent for exploration, with some extending their hours on Friday evenings. On the final Friday of each month, the V&A organizes a V&A Late, transforming the museum into a lively gathering featuring drinks and live music!

In addition to museum visits, I have a penchant for exploring East London neighborhoods like Canary Wharf, Hackney, and Isle of Dogs. This region is rich in historical and artistic landmarks. My favorite location is Trinity Buoy Wharf, established on the grounds of a former canning warehouse, now serving as a hub for a startup focused on creating temporary structures from shipping containers. This space fosters creative manufacturing and accommodates art studios, including the original lighthouse lab where Michael Faraday conducted his work!

Dining out in London

London presents great deals if you know where to seek them, with numerous options for affordable yet fantastic food. I’ve compiled a list of eateries with discounts across the city, making dining out more budget-friendly.

One notable place is in South Kensington, where Wright Brothers hosts an Oyster Happy Hour, featuring oysters priced at just £1 each! This is a remarkable deal, especially if you long for the flavors of home seafood.

Tooting in South London is famous for its culinary scene. Tooting Market and Tooting Broadway Market are expansive indoor street food venues offering a diverse array of cuisines. If you’re searching for tastes that remind you of home, I strongly recommend checking out Tooting’s food markets!

Taking a respite from the city

While the rhythm of London is part of its allure, there are times when the Tube may feel overwhelming, or the streets too crowded. Luckily, London is well-served by trains and coaches, making it simple to escape the city for a weekend getaway.

My preferred places to visit include Surrey and Kent. Canterbury is a picturesque medieval town in southern England, brimming with history and accommodating spots for students. In Surrey, the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) boasts a large botanical garden in Wisley, ideal for a leisurely summer outing.

In conclusion, London is a dynamic city with endless opportunities and sights to discover, so take your time to explore everything it has to offer during your stay at Imperial!
