Embarking on a PhD journey can feel daunting, yet with the right support, it can transform into a fulfilling endeavor that clarifies your ambitions and passions. Here’s a roadmap from my experience of discovering, selecting, and applying for a PhD at Imperial.

Reasons to pursue a PhD

Prior to commencing your search, clarify your motivation for seeking a PhD. It represents a significant dedication, so confirm it resonates with your aspirations. A PhD cultivates the skills needed to become an independent researcher, a competency I consider crucial for my professional goals.

In addition to technical expertise, I was drawn to the autonomy and innovation that academia offers. My enthusiasm for science flourishes when I immerse myself in subjects I am passionate about, which is why I selected a PhD project that genuinely captivated my interest. The power to steer my project is a notable benefit and one of my preferred aspects of pursuing a PhD.

Think about creating a pros and cons list to assess whether a PhD is genuinely what you desire. What are your expectations?

The PhD application journey

The trajectory typically consists of several phases:

  1. Searching for a PhD
  2. Submitting a preliminary application
  3. Creating a shortlist
  4. Interviews
  5. Receiving conditional or definitive offers
  6. Funding evaluations

Interviews generally emphasize your motivations, comprehension of the project, previous research experience, and problem-solving methods. I prepared by revisiting my application, diving into relevant literature, and contemplating my experiences for confident discussion.

Locating a PhD

Determine what research inspires you, the atmosphere in which you thrive, and the competencies you wish to develop. Resources for finding your PhD include:

  • University websites such as Imperial’s for department-specific PhD offerings
  • Centralized PhD platforms and job boards like FindAPhD
  • Research group and supervisor homepages
  • Academic networks and referrals from lecturers or supervisors
  • Funding organization and doctoral training center sites

My approach included securing funding from my home nation and identifying a research group at Imperial that aligned with my interests. I delved into the Imperial site, assessed researcher and group details, and analyzed their research contributions.

While I was a Master’s student at Imperial, I consulted with lecturers to identify suitable research groups. I discovered my current supervisor through a list shared by my MSc course leader.

Interact with everyone and gather extensive insights. I am aware of a peer who stumbled upon their project through a serendipitous meeting in a pub.

Securing funding for your PhD

If you aren’t self-financing, investigate diverse PhD funding avenues such as:

  • Fully-funded PhD projects publicized by supervisors
  • UK Research Council studentships
  • External financing from research councils, charities, and industries
  • Scholarships and fellowships targeting specific backgrounds or research fields
  • Grants and loans

Familiarize yourself with funding deadlines and eligibility requirements early on, as they often vary from the application deadlines for projects.

Imperial provides multiple funding options, but they are highly competitive, so ensure your application aligns with the funder’s objectives.
