**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and quiet, stepping into the unfamiliar felt like a major challenge. Now, reflecting on a year filled with personal growth, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment, I realize how significant this experience has been. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting hurdles I encountered was forging friendships. If you are a prospective student reading this, you may feel similarly apprehensive. I recall my first day settling into my accommodation—spending the entire time tucked away in my room because I was too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I could ask for.

Here at Imperial, I have discovered a second family, and it all commenced with simple steps—like engaging in light conversation with others who were just as apprehensive as I was. What did I take away from this? Taking that first step at the beginning of the year is invariably rewarding. If you aren’t prepared or don’t feel at ease immediately, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet others. Most importantly, be yourself. With such a diverse student community, you are sure to find individuals who share your passions and values.

### Tackling Academic Obstacles

Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the course material. The shift from A-levels to university was quite significant, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel daunted and doubt your capabilities when you see others studying and seem to have everything under control.

What aided me in pushing through was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you don’t grasp something, it’s likely that others are finding it challenging as well. The important thing is to ask for assistance—be it from classmates or academic staff. Learning to seek help is probably the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year.

### The Importance of Supportive Faculty

Speaking of support, the faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They truly care about your success and recognize the challenges that students encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us and were always willing to address our issues.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the available pastoral support until the end of the year, and I wish I had done so earlier. At the year’s outset, I made the decision to become a well-being representative. This role allowed me to cultivate relationships with faculty members, which proved to be tremendously valuable. There are countless ways to connect with faculty, and I highly encourage making the most of them. My biggest lesson? Don’t hesitate to use the available resources and assistance—you can never have too much support.

### Insights Gained

This year has taught me that the apprehension I experienced—both before I began university and throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. With the extensive support offered by faculty and peers, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned to juggle the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.

Looking back, I recognize how much I’ve matured, and I eagerly anticipate what awaits me. To anyone about to start their university experience: take the plunge, confront the challenges, and remember—you can do this.
