**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was about to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, stepping into the unknown was quite intimidating. Now, as I reflect on an academic year filled with development, obstacles, and memorable experiences, I can appreciate the knowledge I’ve gained and the progress I’ve made.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting elements of starting university was the idea of forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might share this sentiment. On my first day in student housing, just a few days prior to the semester commencing, I spent the entire day in my room, too anxious to go out and meet others. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced.

The breakthrough came when I made the choice to take a chance and engage in small talks with individuals who were in similar situations. Gradually, these interactions developed into significant friendships, and I now feel as though I’ve found a second family here at Imperial.

What did I take away from this experience? First, it’s beneficial to take that initial step of faith at the beginning of the year, even if it feels uneasy. If you’re not ready immediately, don’t stress—there are numerous icebreaker events and ways to meet new people. Second, the most important thing is to be authentic. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re bound to connect with individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Addressing Academic Hurdles

Adapting to the demands and complexity of university-level material was another significant challenge. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more formidable. It’s easy to feel swamped or question your skills when you observe others studying and assume they have everything under control.

What assisted me during this time was the understanding that everyone faces similar challenges. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, it’s likely that others are too. The crucial lesson I learned during my first year is to seek assistance—whether it’s from fellow students or faculty members. This is perhaps the most important lesson I acquired throughout my first year: don’t hesitate to reach out for help.

### Establishing Connections with Faculty

Speaking of support, the personnel in the Materials department are tremendous. They truly care about student success and are compassionate about the challenges we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they kept lines of communication open with us and were always willing to listen to our concerns.

Although I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. Serving as a year well-being representative was one of the bold steps I took at the onset of the year, and it ultimately proved to be an excellent decision. It enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My recommendation? Make the most of the support and resources at your disposal—you can never receive too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve discovered that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to and during university—was frequently unfounded. With a plethora of support options accessible from staff and fellow students, I came to realize that I was never genuinely alone. This year has taught me how to balance stress from exams and deadlines with moments of enjoyment and relaxation.

As I gear up to enter my second year, I am thankful for the challenges, growth, and friendships that have defined my journey thus far. To anyone preparing to embark on their university path: take the plunge, be true to yourself, and don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. You’re capable of achieving great things!
