**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what awaited me. I was preparing to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who has always been introverted and reserved, diving into this new experience felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on an academic year packed with growth, challenges, and unforgettable experiences, I can say wholeheartedly that it’s been a life-changing journey. So, what have I learned this year, and how do I feel about my current position?
### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting aspects I encountered at the beginning of university was making connections. For numerous prospective students, this serves as a significant source of worry, and I was no different. On my inaugural day in student accommodation, merely days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire time sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly assert that I’ve established some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.
These connections didn’t materialize instantly; they commenced with small gestures—like initiating conversations with others who shared my hesitations. Gradually, these relationships evolved into a second family here at Imperial. The primary lesson I gleaned? Take that leap of faith early on. If you feel hesitant or uncomfortable initially, don’t fret—there will be ample icebreakers and events tailored to assist you in meeting others. Most importantly, stay true to yourself. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re destined to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major obstacle was adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more arduous. It’s all too easy to feel overwhelmed or to question your capabilities when you observe others studying and appearing to thrive.
What benefitted me the most was understanding that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re finding it hard to comprehend something, it’s likely that others are too. The crucial point is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or the teaching staff. This is arguably the most beneficial skill to cultivate during your first year. Don’t hesitate to reach out; collaboration and support are vital for navigating the academic hurdles of university life.
### The Value of Support and Community
In terms of support, the staff in the Materials department have been outstanding. They truly care about the success of students and are compassionate regarding the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open communication, addressing our concerns and providing guidance.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the latter part of the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Taking on the responsibility of a well-being representative was one of the bold steps I took at the year’s start, and it turned out to be an enriching experience. It enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which proved invaluable. There are numerous opportunities to engage with staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My main takeaway? Utilize the resources and support mechanisms available to you—there’s no such thing as too much help!
### Insights Gained
Looking back on my first year, I’ve come to understand that many of the anxieties I had—both before and during university—were exaggerated. With the extensive support from both staff and fellow students, those concerns became manageable. This year has taught me that I’m never truly alone and that it’s feasible to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with joyful and fulfilling moments.
As I progress, I’m thankful for my personal development, the friendships I’ve cultivated, and the lessons I’ve acquired. If you are about to commence your own university adventure, remember that while the challenges may appear formidable, the rewards far outweigh them. Take that leap, seek assistance, and fully embrace the experience—you certainly won’t regret it.
