**Thoughts on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

About ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, apprehension, and doubt regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of commencing my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and cautious, plunging into this new phase of life seemed overwhelming. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and memorable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my status today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting aspects of beginning university was the prospect of making friends. If you’re someone considering this path, it’s probably a concern weighing on your mind as well. On my first day moving into my accommodation—just days before the start of term—I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced.

The breakthrough came when I took a chance and struck up conversations with those who were just as apprehensive as I was. That simple action led me to discover a second family here at Imperial, both within my course and throughout the university. My key takeaway? Take that risk early on. Even if you feel unprepared, numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect await you. And most importantly, stay true to yourself. With such a diversified community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Addressing the Academic Shift

Adapting to the academic challenges of university was another major hurdle. The transition from A-levels to university assignments was distinct, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when witnessing others’ study habits and wondering if you are keeping pace.

What aided me during these times was the understanding that everyone faces comparable hurdles. If you find something unclear, it’s likely that others are experiencing the same difficulty. The essential step is to seek assistance—be it from classmates or the faculty. Learning to request support may well be the most crucial skill you will hone in your first year.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty

The faculty in the Materials Science department have been outstanding. They truly wish to see students thrive and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication lines open and actively responded to student inquiries.

Although I didn’t fully access the pastoral resources until the tail end of the year, I wish I had taken advantage of them earlier. At the beginning, I made a courageous choice by becoming a year well-being representative, which allowed me to foster valuable relationships with staff members. This role gave me a glimpse into how approachable and supportive they can be. Whether through official roles or simple conversations, becoming acquainted with the faculty can be immensely advantageous. My suggestion? Fully utilize the resources and assistance available to you—there’s no such thing as too much support.

### Insights Gained

Looking back on my first year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I had before starting university—and even throughout the year—was frequently unfounded. With the extensive support from both faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely on my own. This year has taught me how to manage pressure from exams and deadlines alongside moments of happiness and enjoyment.

Ultimately, university represents a path of development, and the difficulties you encounter will only strengthen your resolve. If you are about to embark on your own journey, seize the opportunities, seek help whenever needed, and make sure to relish the experience.
