### Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nervousness, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was about to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and reserved, venturing into the unfamiliar was a formidable challenge. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it was filled with personal development, obstacles to overcome, and a great deal of enjoyment. But what insights did I gain from this experience, and how do I feel now?

#### Conquering the Apprehension of Friendships

One of the primary obstacles I encountered at first was forming friendships. Beginning university can be daunting, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it’s likely one of your greatest concerns. On my first day of moving into my accommodation—just days prior to the beginning of term—I spent the whole day in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet new people.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. Here at Imperial, particularly within my course, I’ve discovered a second family. All it required was stepping outside my comfort zone and initiating brief conversations with others who shared my feelings.

So, what did I take away from this? I learned that taking a chance at the start of the year truly pays off. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease right away, that’s perfectly fine—there are numerous casual events and chances to engage with others. Above all, I learned that being authentic is crucial. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find others whose interests and values align with yours.

#### Tackling Academic Obstacles

Another major challenge was adapting to the course’s workload and complexity. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more demanding. It’s common to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and wonder if you measure up.

What aided me in overcoming these hurdles was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar feelings. If something is unclear to you, chances are there are others who are puzzled too. The most valuable lesson I gained in my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether it’s from fellow students or faculty, being proactive in asking for help can truly alter your experience.

#### The Encouraging Faculty

Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is outstanding. The lecturers and tutors are genuinely invested in your success and are fully aware of the challenges students encounter. They are empathetic and maintain open lines of communication year-round to tackle any dilemmas we might face.

Though I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had embraced it earlier. At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a wellbeing representative for my year. This role enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which proved remarkably beneficial. There are many avenues to engage with the staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support that’s available to you—you can never have too much assistance!

#### Reflections

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that the nervousness I experienced—both before starting university and throughout the year—was often unwarranted. There is a wealth of support available, whether from the faculty or fellow students, to guide you through any challenges.

This year has shown me that I’m never alone, even during high-stress periods like exams and deadlines. It’s also taught me how to strike a balance between diligent work and enjoying life.

As I look ahead, I’m eager to keep evolving, learning, and making the most of my time at Imperial.
