Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current position?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the most frightening aspects of commencing university, and if you’re a future student, it may be one of your greatest concerns. On my first day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the beginning of term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and connect with others. However, reflecting on this moment today, I can assertively say that I have formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with those in similar circumstances. So, what did I uncover? I discovered that taking risks at the commencement of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel completely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be countless opportunities for ice-breaking and events designed to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, be authentic. With so many diverse individuals in the course and university, you’re sure to find people who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some regards, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone is navigating the same experience. If you aren’t grasping a concept, I can nearly assure you that others aren’t either. Thus, seek out assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show understanding toward students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t truly leverage the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks previously – I did take one at the year’s onset by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. Numerous avenues exist to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this dimension of university life is to make the most of the assistance available to you. There’s no such thing as too much help!

In conclusion, this year has illuminated for me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently unwarranted and can be eased through the various support systems offered by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never truly alone and how to find enjoyment even amid stressors like exams and deadlines.
