Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown wasn’t exactly what my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Reflecting back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current state?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. This is unquestionably one of the more daunting elements of commencing university life, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it may be one of your primary concerns. On my first day of moving into my housing, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too intimidated to exit and meet others. However, sitting here now, I can confidently state that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in casual conversations with those in similar situations. So, what have I learned? I’ve learned that it’s always advantageous to take the plunge at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events designed to assist you in making connections with others. I’ve also realized that if you can embody one thing, it should be your authentic self. There are so many diverse individuals across the course and university; you’re sure to find others like you.

Another obstacle was the sheer workload and difficulty level of the content. There was undoubtedly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater shift from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an atmosphere isn’t always easy for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors helped me navigate that feeling, one being the acknowledgment that everyone is facing similar challenges. If something confuses you, I can almost assure you that a handful of others are experiencing the same confusion. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the single most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend that students encounter difficulties. They demonstrate empathy towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year about our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so sooner. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I did take one at the year’s start by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to familiarize myself with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to utilize the assistance available to you. You can never have an excess!

In conclusion, this year has imparted to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be mitigated by the plethora of support options available from faculty and fellow students. It’s taught me that I’m never alone, and it has illustrated how to enjoy my experience amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
