Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, frightened, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly shy and reserved self was used to. In hindsight, I see a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?
One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it might be among your primary worries. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day hiding in my room, far too intimidated to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here today, I can assert that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and in this program. I’ve built a second family at Imperial, and all it required was a little small talk with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be countless ice-breaking opportunities and events to encourage your interaction with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one trait, it should be authenticity. There are so many diverse individuals across the course and university; you’re sure to find people like yourself.
Another challenge was the workload and the difficulty of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always easy for your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the realization that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If something is unclear to you, I can almost assure you that there are at least a few others who share your confusion. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the single most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to excel and understand that students face difficulties. They empathize with students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had begun utilizing it earlier. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to get acquainted with the faculty members, which is immensely valuable. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and it’s certainly one of the finest things you can do for your own benefit! My principal takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance that’s being provided to you. You can never have too much!
In a broader sense, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are typically irrational and can be alleviated through the numerous support options available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone, and it has taught me how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
