By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with nerves, fear, and doubt about what lay ahead as I embarked on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Taking the plunge into the great unknown was not a typical experience for my previously shy and reserved self. Looking back now, the academic year has been a journey of personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! What insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of attending university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may weigh heavily on your mind. On the day I moved into my accommodation, just a few days before classes started, I remained in my room all day, feeling too intimidated to step out and introduce myself. However, I now proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with fellow students in similar situations. What did I learn? It’s beneficial to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ice-breaking activities designed to help you connect with others. Also, if you take away one piece of advice, let it be to remain true to yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals across the course and university, you’re certain to meet like-minded people.

Another challenge was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was a noticeable increase from A-levels, and an even larger jump from the first to the second term. Being in this kind of environment can impact your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and start to feel inadequate. Several things assisted me in managing this, one being the realization that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you find something difficult to understand, I can almost guarantee that others share your confusion. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most vital lesson learned in the first year. Reach out to classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the challenges students encounter. They show understanding towards students and keep open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I did not fully tap into the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had started earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to get acquainted with the staff, which is invaluable. There are various avenues to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My main takeaway is to seize the opportunities for support that are available. You can never have too much help!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be eased by the support options provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to have fun despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
