Ten months back, in October 2022, I found myself feeling anxious and unsure about what lay ahead as I prepared to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Embracing the unknown was not typical for my previously reserved self. Looking back on the last academic year, I recognize a path of individual development, obstacles, and enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?
One of the initial and most overwhelming hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently among the most daunting facets of beginning university, and for prospective students, it might pose a considerable worry. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, mere days prior to the term’s commencement, I thoroughly spent the day in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself. Now, I’m pleased to say I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which all initiated with casual conversations with others in comparable situations. What did I discover? It’s advisable to take a leap of faith at the year’s outset. If you’re not ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that being authentic is vital. With so many diverse individuals in the course and at the university, you’re bound to find people who share your interests.
Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a distinct jump from A-levels, and an even larger leap from the first to the second term. Existing in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may feel inferior compared to peers. What aided me was recalling that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, others probably don’t as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out to classmates and faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to flourish and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They sympathize with us and maintain regular communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s close, but I wish I had done so sooner. I spoke of taking leaps earlier— and I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the staff, which is priceless. There are numerous ways to engage with the faculty, and it’s among the best actions you can take for your own benefit! My main lesson is to make the most of the assistance provided. You can never have too much support!
All in all, this year has shown me that the anxious feelings before and during university are frequently baseless and can be eased with the assistance available from staff and fellow students. I’ve learned that I’m never isolated and how to find joy despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
