Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as an incoming freshman. Stepping into the unknown was not something my formerly shy and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year replete with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current standing?

One of the foremost and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more frightening elements of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it may be one of your greatest worries. On my inaugural day of moving into my hall, a few days ahead of the term’s start, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to leave and meet others. However, seated here today, I can assert that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced, both at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in casual conversation with those in similar positions. So, what did I come to understand? I found that it’s always optimal to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not entirely ready or at ease, fear not! There will be ample ice-breaking chances and events to facilitate connections with others. I’ve also come to realize that if you can embody one thing, let it be your true self. With such a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you are sure to encounter others who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the amount of work and the level of difficulty in the content. There was indeed a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such a setting isn’t always beneficial for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone faces similar challenges. If you find something perplexing, I can nearly assure you that there are at least a few others who are equally confused. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial thing to master in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The staff within the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand that students experience difficulties. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t truly utilize the support services until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of them sooner. As I mentioned earlier about taking chances – I took one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous actions you can take for your own benefit! My primary lesson from this segment of university life is to capitalize on the assistance available to you. You can never have too much help!

In conclusion, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are typically unfounded and can be alleviated by the wide array of support options provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never on my own, and it has illustrated how to find joy alongside pressures such as exams and deadlines.
