Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead as I embarked on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! What insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
One of the foremost and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may weigh heavily on your mind. On my inaugural day of moving into my residence, just days before the semester commenced, I spent the entire day in my room, too frightened to venture out and introduce myself. Today, I can proudly declare that I’ve forged some of the best friendships during my time at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which all initiated with casual conversations with others in similar predicaments. What have I realized? It’s advantageous to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, fear not! There will be numerous ice-breaking events to facilitate your connection with others. I also discovered that being authentic is essential. With such a wide range of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re certain to encounter kindred spirits.
Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was a significant transition from A-levels, and an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can rattle your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate this, one being the reminder that everyone finds themselves in similar circumstances. If you’re struggling with something, it’s probable that others are too. Therefore, seek assistance. This is arguably the most vital lesson to embrace in the first year. Reach out for support from peers and faculty!
This leads me to my next subject. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and grasp the challenges students encounter. They are empathetic and maintain continuous dialogue with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps—I took one by becoming a year wellbeing representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is priceless. There are numerous opportunities to engage with the faculty, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have an excess of support!
In summary, this year has shown me that apprehensive feelings regarding university are frequently baseless and can be eased by the support provided by faculty and fellow students. It has revealed that I am never truly alone and has taught me how to find enjoyment despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
