**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what the future held. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Plunging into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Now, reflecting on an academic year full of development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment, I find myself contemplating the lessons I’ve absorbed and the progress I’ve made.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most intimidating hurdles I encountered at university’s onset was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might be feeling the same way. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the official start of term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to anyone.

Fast forward to now, and I can boldly say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. The individuals I’ve encountered here have become like a second family. All it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversations with others who were feeling similarly.

So, what’s the takeaway? I discovered that taking the initiative at the beginning of the year is always worthwhile. If you aren’t feeling prepared or at ease, that’s alright—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others throughout the year. Most crucially, I learned that being authentic is the best strategy. With a multitude of diverse individuals at Imperial, you’re sure to find those who resonate with your interests and values.

### Managing the Academic Demands

Another prominent challenge was becoming accustomed to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the jump from the first term to the second was even more striking. It wasn’t always simple to maintain confidence in such a demanding environment. Observing others study and excel can occasionally lead to self-doubt.

What aided me through this was the understanding that everyone is navigating similar situations. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The essential lesson is to seek assistance—this could be the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year. Whether it involves reaching out to peers or faculty, don’t hesitate to request help.

### Supportive Faculty and Well-Being Resources

On the topic of support, the faculty within the Materials department have been phenomenal. They sincerely desire for students to thrive and are sensitive to the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us and were consistently ready to address our questions.

I didn’t fully leverage the well-being resources offered to me until late in the year, and I wish I had taken advantage of them sooner. At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step and became a well-being representative for my year. This role provided me with an opportunity to engage with faculty members, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. There are various ways to develop rapport with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My most significant lesson? Utilize the assistance and resources available to you—you can never receive too much support!

### Key Takeaways

In summary, this year has illustrated to me that the apprehensive feelings I experienced—both before commencing university and throughout the year—were frequently unfounded. With the extensive array of support provided by faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve acquired the ability to juggle the stress of exams and deadlines alongside moments of happiness, and I’ve evolved in ways I never anticipated.

To anyone preparing to embark on their university experience: take the plunge, welcome the challenges, and don’t hesitate to seek support. You’ll emerge stronger and with unforgettable memories.
