**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with apprehension, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the verge of beginning my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been quiet and reserved, plunging into this new phase was intimidating. Reflecting now, I recognize a year marked by personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends

One of the most daunting hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. For many incoming students, this ranks as one of the largest worries about starting university. On my first day in student housing, just prior to the term’s commencement, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known.

Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family—friends who have stood by me throughout this journey. It all initiated with casual conversations and connecting with those experiencing similar situations. My key takeaway? Embrace that leap at the beginning of the year. Even if you’re unprepared or feeling uneasy, have no fear—there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, just be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Addressing the Academic Hurdles

Adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the course material was yet another major challenge. The shift from A-levels to university studies was stark, and the transition from the initial term to the subsequent one felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when seeing others study and seemingly thrive.

What aided me during those times was recognizing that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re finding it difficult to grasp a concept, there’s a good chance others are too. The crucial point is to seek assistance—either from classmates or teaching staff. Learning to ask for support is perhaps the most crucial skill you can acquire in your first year.

### Assistance from the Materials Department

Speaking of help, the faculty in the Materials department have been remarkable. They genuinely wish for students to flourish and are understanding of the challenges we confront. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our inquiries and offering guidance.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until late in the year, I wish I had utilized it earlier. Initially, I ventured out by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to build connections with faculty members. This proved to be an invaluable experience. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university journey. My recommendation? Make the most of the support systems available—you can never receive too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Upon reflecting on this past year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to commencing university and during the year—was frequently unjustified. With the abundant support accessible from faculty and fellow students, those apprehensions can be alleviated. I’ve come to understand that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to balance having fun with managing the inevitable stress of exams and deadlines.

This year has been a transformative adventure, and I eagerly anticipate what lies ahead as I progress in my studies in Materials Science and Engineering.
